Biography
As a teenager growing up in the turbulent 1960s, Otomo saw protests by both students and workers against the Japanese government everywhere. This period of change led to the Japan we know today - a Japan in stark contrast to Japan occupied after World War II. The riots, demonstrations and in general the chaotic situation of that time, served as inspiration for his best known work, Akira .
The animation of this period (especially the work coming out of the Tokyo animation studios Mushi Production and Toei Doga) influenced the young Otomo. Works like Gigantor, Astro Boy and Hols, Prince of the Sun would encourage Otomo to develop his career in the world of animation. However, it was the films coming from the United States that channeled his rebellious nature. My life is my life and Easy Rider would serve as inspiration for the character of Shotaro Kaneda and his biker gang in Akira: young rebels who are troubled and unconcerned with authority or the pressure placed on them by their parents' generation..
