Kanno

Kanno is the name of the Supreme Being, among the natives of the Malagasy coasts as the creator of everything that exists: they believed that all goods emanate from him. However, they did not grant it an eternal duration. He would have, as his successor, another being who was to punish vice and reward virtue.

All the towns of this coast trace back to this god the origin of circumcision, to which they subject their children from the age of six months. Although the people have a very high faith in him; however all his worship is directed to the spirits of the dead.
