K-PAX is a film co-produced between the United States and Germany. Based on the novel K-PAX by Gene Brewer. There has been a lot of controversy around its plot, since it is accused of plagiarizing the Argentine film Man Looking Southeast, by Eliseo Subiela, with a practically identical starting point. The complaint was later withdrawn.

Summary

In a mental hospital one of the patients who calls himself Prot (Kevin Spacey) claims to be from another planet. His doctor (Jeff Bridges) tries to help him back to reality. Throughout his stay at the psychiatric hospital, Prot makes the doctor himself, as well as the rest of the center staff and patients, doubt his true identity, demonstrating knowledge about the field of astronomy that no human being knows, as well as helping the patients of the center to be cured of their mental illnesses. Prot's doctor feels that Prot "has chosen him" with which he continues to care for him despite the fact that he tries to transfer Prot to another level of the psychiatric hospital. Through Prot's hypnosis, Powell obtains information that leads him to a small town and Prot's apparent identity, along with his story: being a near-genius, he decides to marry his (pregnant) high school sweetheart and work next door. of his father in a slaughterhouse, to support his family. One day, returning from work, he discovers to his horror that an ex-convict has raped and murdered his wife and his daughter, so he kills him and then jumps into a nearby river with the intention of committing suicide. Officially, he was never prosecuted because he disappeared and the sheriff of the place has no interest in locating him either, since he understands Prot's actions. This explains part of his behavior, but the inexplicable thing occurs when the term of the "visit" arrives. #3. 4; from Prot to the planet, the date on which the doctor feared that he would commit suicide, which does not happen, but he remains in a catatonic state (leaving open the possibility that the extraterrestrial entity has left the body, leaving it as an empty container or that, in case of being only mentally ill, that said disease ended up cutting his ties with reality), while one of the hospital patients disappears, the others understanding that she was the one chosen to accompany Prot to K-pax, the supposed planet where he came from. At the end of the film you can see the reunion of Powell and his son with whom he was estranged, but thanks to Prot he manages to become friends.
