K-Meleon is a free web browser based on the Gecko web rendering engine. The goal of K-Meleon is to provide a lightweight browser for Microsoft Windows (Win32), similar to Galeon or Firefox. K-Meleon is distributed under the GNU license. It is a browser: "extremely fast, light and configurable" Its low consumption of system resources makes it work perfectly on very old computers. It is also configurable and highly modifiable, making it very easy to add any functionality (even if it was not originally foreseen by its designers). The forums on its official page are very active and extremely useful, being the best place to receive technical support and various advice from its members.

Since the native Windows interface is used instead of XUL, K-Meleon cannot install Mozilla extensions and themes, possibly one of the most important features of these browsers. However, K-Meleon has its own set of add-ons such as macros and skins, which can extend the functionality and customize the appearance of the K-Meleon. browser.

After a slowdown in its development during 2004 and especially 2005, due to the abandonment of the project by its original developers, in January 2006 there was a vigorous relaunch thanks to the inclusion of new administrators and developers who have given new life to the project. After launching two security updates between January and April 2006, on August 1, 2006, the first non-beta version of the browser was released, which included numerous new features and improvements, and as happens with Firefox or SeaMonkey, revisions are published as bugs are fixed in Gecko.

With version 1.00 native support was given for the languages English, French and German. Version 1.1, published on May 22, 2007, incorporated Spanish as a natively supported language for the first time. Version 1.5, published in August 2008, meant a great leap forward and a complete internal restructuring of the program by replacing the layers with tabs (with the consequent saving of system resources) and rewriting around a third of the code, also including translations into Russian and Polish.

At the end of 2013 the K-Meleon group started developing new versions based on 25 XULrunner, Mozilla's runtime environment, instead of the Gecko environment, which was released under the code name "KM74". In mid-October 2015, the final version of K-Meleon 74 was published, which was a milestone in the development of this fantastic and unique browser.

In September 2015, the latest stable version of K-Meleon, version 75.1, was released, while version 76 Beta 2 is currently under development.
