Jumellea

Jumellea is a genus of about 40 to 50 monopodial epiphytic or lithophytic, occasionally terrestrial species of orchids. They are found mostly in the islands of the Indian Ocean, the Comoro Islands, the Mascarene Islands and especially in Madagascar, there are 2 species in continental tropical East Africa. This genus is very close to Angraecum.

Description

The genus Jumellea is made up of a few species of monopodial orchids that are epiphytes. Embankments may form at the base of the plants over time. Some species develop by climbing up the tree, while others show vine habits among the branches of the trees.

They have short stems or some are relatively long with leaves arranged along the stem or fan-shaped. The flowers have short segments and a lanceolate labellum that does not envelop the column. All inflorescences have a single fragrant, white or greenish-white flower.

Jumellea saggittata produces beautiful fans of strap-like leaves. The white flowers, one on each stem, are produced from the leaf axil.

Jumellea fragrans was known as the "Faham Tea" during the Victorian era because its dried leaves were imported into England to be infused as a delicate and fragrant tea.

The biggest challenge to conserving many of these orchids in Madagascar is the gradual loss of their habitats.

Distribution and habitat

These epiphytic orchids are found on the islands of the Indian Ocean, the Comoro Islands, the Mascarene Islands and mainly in Madagascar, there are two species in continental tropical Africa.

Many species thrive in forests at elevations of 1000-2000 where lichens grow and there are strong winds, at lower elevations in humid forests along with mosses.

Taxonomy

The genus was described by Rudolf Schlechter and published in Die Orchideen 609. 1914.

Etymology

Jumellea: Generic name given in honor of Dr. Henri Lucien Jumelle, a French botanist.
