Juan Echanove Labanda (Madrid, April 1, 1961) is a Spanish actor.

Biography

He studied law and entered the School of Dramatic Art in Madrid. In 1986 he participated in the film Time of silencewhere it became known, and as a result it obtained the role of Cosme in the series Informal turnin which he reached a certain notoriety.

Thanks to his success, he was called for a significant number of films, including Divine Words (1987), for which he won the Goya award for best male supporting performance. This title was followed by Go down to the Moor, Alone with you or The longest night. On television she starred in 1991 Girls of Today, with which she won a Fotogramas de Plata.

Two years later, in 1993, he enjoyed his greatest professional success when he led the cast of Madregilda (Francisco Regueiro), where he played a self-conscious and weak Francisco Franco. For this work Juan Echanove won the Silver Shell for best actor at the San Sebastián Film Festival, the Goya Award for best male lead performance, the Sant Jordi Award for best actor as well as the Ondas Award and a nomination for the Fotogramas de Silver that he lost to Javier Bardem. His intervention that same year in My brother of the soul by Mariano Barroso resulted in another nomination for the Goya Awards, this time in the category of best supporting actor.

In those twelve months she made her professional debut as a singer. Together with Víctor Manuel, Ana Belén, Pablo Milanés, Miguel Ríos, Manolo Tena, Antonio Flores, Joaquín Sabina and Joan Manuel Serrat he carried out a concert tour that was later recorded on a double CD titled Mucho más que dos. Between the filming of each film, Echanove participated in films such as La flor de mi secreto (Pedro Almodóvar, 1995), Her eyes closed and the world keeps moving (Jaime Chávarri, 1997) or The Barbarian Years (Fernando Colomo, 1998). In the first of them he played a journalist capable of reviving a writer whose marriage had failed. In the second, a Falangist eager to imprison some escaped prisoners, played by Ernesto Alterio and Jordi Mollá. In 1997 his son Juan was born.

Starting in 2000, he gave priority to his theatrical career in works such as The Executioner or The Stranger. To ensure the attendance of young audiences in them, the actor agreed to join the cast of Un paso tiempo , where he played an intransigent teacher whose brother was imprisoned. Agustín Díaz Yanes called him for a small role in Sin Noticias de Dios.

At that time, Juan Echanove was quite active in politics. In February 2003, he attended a protest against ETA's terrorism, a few days after being expelled from the Congress Palace along with Juan Luis Galiardo, María Barranco, Ana Belén, Pilar Bardem, Jordi Dauder and Amparo Larrañaga, for showing off. a t-shirt on which the insignia "No to war" was printed. In March 2004, he celebrated the victory of José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero at the PSOE headquarters in Madrid.

In 2005 he returned to the cinema, filming highly publicized films such as Welcome Home (David Trueba) or Alatriste (Agustín Díaz Yanes), in which he coincided with performers such as Concha Velasco, Carlos Larrañaga, Alejo Sauras, Pilar López de Ayala, Jorge Sanz, Eduardo Noriega, Viggo Mortensen, Ariadna Gil or Unax Ugalde. In the first of them he played a blind film critic, whose girlfriend died in the same car accident in which he lost his sight, and whose life has passed in solitude until the arrival of a reporter at his magazine sharpens his envy towards the men. the rest. In the second he played Francisco de Quevedo.

In the fall of that same 2005 he played Miguel Alcántara Barbadillo, brother of Antonio Alcántara (Imanol Arias) in the series Cuéntame como paso, a man who emigrated to France, where he divorced his wife, and upon returning to Spain he decides to make a living by driving a taxi and opening a bar-restaurant. In 2017, after twelve years as part of the permanent cast of the series Cuéntame como paso , he leaves the fiction of La 1 de TVE, by decision of the production company.
