At 1.93 meters tall, he played shooting guard. He currently holds the position of general manager of the basketball section of Fútbol Club Barcelona.

He spent almost his entire sports career at ACB Barcelona (1998-2007 and 2008-2018), a club of which he was a youth squad player and later captain, with whom he won 23 titles, including eight Leagues, seven Cups, five Super Cups and two Euroleagues, being with 4152 points, the highest scorer in history in the Euroleague. He played the 2007/08 season in the Memphis Grizzlies of the NBA, together with his compatriot Pau Gasol.

As a Spanish international, he championed a successful generation known as the "Golden Juniors", who were proclaimed junior European champion in 1998 and junior world champion in 1999, defeating the United States in the final. He was an absolute international and captain of the Spanish team between 2000 and 2017, totaling 253 games, which make him the most capped basketball player in the history of Spain. With it he won ten medals among the three major championships, having proclaimed himself, among other successes, world champion in 2006, two-time European champion in 2009 and 2011 and double Olympic runner-up in Beijing 2008 and London 2012.

In October 2021 he was included as a player in the Spanish Basketball Hall of Fame in the class of 2019.

Trajectory

Beginnings

The passion for basketball came to Navarro from a very young age through the influence of Juan Antonio Avellano with whom he frequently played in a basket that was in the patio of his house. From this time he had to get used to attacking the defenses of players much taller than him, which led him to start developing resources that would later accompany him throughout his career. It was his own brothers who encouraged him to sign up for the C selection tests. B. Santfeliuenc, a team in which he began to take his first steps as a basketball player when he was only 8 years old. At the age of 12, a scout from F. C. Barcelona noticed him and signed him for play in a category higher than the one that corresponded to him by age.

F. C. Barcelona

Lower categories

After going through all the lower categories of the club, in the 96-97 season he finally got a card with the junior team. A season later he began to combine the junior team with the team linked in the EBA league and on November 23, 1997, at just 17 years of age, he made his debut in the ACB league with Joan Montes as coach in a match against Covirán Granada in which he scored 10 points in 10 minutes of play. During the 98-99 season he still combined his performances in the EBA league team with the increasingly frequent appearances with the first team.

Bomb nickname

The nickname of "La Bomba Navarro" with which the Spanish sports press refers to the player, refers to his performances in lower categories and later as a professional and his ability to blow up games, with long shots to the basket or unexpected drop shots. Derived from these actions, his jump shots are colloquially called "bombs", because of that peculiar arched trajectory.

Debut with the first team, season 1999-2000

In the 1999-2000 season, Navarro finally made the leap and became part of the first team of F. C. Barcelona exclusively under the guidance of coach Aíto García Reneses. At just 19 years old and with two titles clubs already in his record (ACB League and Korac Cup 98-99), in addition to being Junior World Champion, since his first season the player's performance is exceptional becoming one of the most important players in the team deciding with his actions in several key matches and being defined by the then Spain coach Lolo Sainz as the most important player in that ACB league along with Raül López. Navarro finished the regular season with an average of 7.3 points per game and was proclaimed runner-up in the competition after losing Barcelona defeated in the final (3-2) against Real Madrid. The player's production during all the play-offs was 9.1 points per game.

Season 2000-01

The 2000-01 season saw the definitive consolidation of Navarro as one of the most important players of F. C. Barcelona, starting 21 of the 32 games he played. That year, F. C. Barcelona was proclaimed champion of the Cup del Rey in which another of the gold juniors exploded, Pau Gasol, the greatest architect of the Barça victory always helped by Navarro himself. Later, in the same season, F. C. Barcelona was the winner of the ACB league with a Navarro also very outstanding. That season the player finished the regular season with an average of 13.1 points per game.

Season 2001-02

The 2001-02 season began in an excellent way for the player with many playing minutes to which the shooting guard responded with excellent performances. Navarro's progress placed the player among the forecasts to be selected in the first round of the NBA draft to be held at the end of the season. However, an ankle injury that dragged him through much of the season, caused his performance to drop and with it his NBA price, even disappearing from the forecasts for the second round of the draft. Finally, the player was chosen by the Washington Wizards in position number 40 (2nd round) so from the beginning he jumped to the NBA was seen as an option for the future.

That season, F. C. Barcelona ended without getting any official title with 9.97 points from Navarro in 37 games played between the regular season and the play-offs of the ACB league.

2002-2003

The 2002/03 season is considered one of the best seasons in the club's history. Together with players of the stature of Dejan Bodiroga and Šarūnas Jasikevičius, they achieved a historic treble, winning the Cup, the League and the long-awaited first Euroleague, winning the Final Four in Barcelona.

2003-2004

2003/04 was the season of Navarro's consecration in Barcelona, being a decisive figure in the team's game. He improved all his scores and scored his best mark in the ACB League with 30 points against Real Madrid.

NBA

Pau Gasol, Navarro's partner for most of his year at the NBA.

For the 2007/08 season, after getting Barcelona to lower his release clause and, after intense negotiations with his NBA rights held by Wizards, on August 16, 2007 he signed the contract that would unite him with the Memphis Grizzlies for one season, which in the end was the only one that played in the North American league.

From the beginning, Navarro's departure to play in the United States was a very risky bet for the Catalan player from an economic point of view. The problems with the salary cap of the Memphis Grizzlies caused the player to sign a contract for a total amount of about 540,000 gross dollars per year (392,000 euros), which meant that he was leaving earning approximately 70% less than what he was at that time. he received in Barcelona. In addition, the agreement he reached with the Barça entity established a clause by which the player had to pay a total of 3.5 million euros spread over the two seasons following his departure (1.7 in the second and 1.8 in the third). With these figures in hand, the player that year became the eighth lowest paid player in the entire NBA. one year would make him a restricted free agent, which meant he would have complete freedom to negotiate a substantial chip increase with any NBA team, although Memphis could always go "right of first refusal" and keep the player if they matched the best offer they could. had the same. Therefore, the player's objective since his arrival in the United States was to have the best possible season in his first year to ensure that a franchise noticed him and to be able to negotiate a significant increase in his contract that would also allow him to deal with the debt he had contracted with Barcelona.

In the Memphis team, he coincided with his compatriot and friend from the lower categories of F. C. Barcelona and the Pau Gasol National Team, which helped him to have a faster integration process into his new city and team, although from early on he had quite a few problems with the American language and customs.

His first match with the Grizzlies jersey was on the NBA Europe Tour against Unicaja in Malaga, scoring 21 points and becoming the top scorer of the game. In his official NBA debut, in the game between the Grizzlies and the San Antonio Spurs on October 31, 2007, he scored 9 points in 17 minutes.

On November 16, 2007, he made 8 of 9 3-pointers in a game against the New Orleans Hornets, tying the NBA record for most 3-pointers made by a rookie in a game.

Juan Carlos Navarro became the third Spanish player to participate in an NBA All-Star Game after the precedents of Pau Gasol (2002) and Jorge Garbajosa (2007) by being part of the rookie team in the event which was played in New Orleans in February 2008 in a game in which he had a very outstanding performance with 14 points, 4 rebounds and 4 assists.

Throughout his debut season, Navarro topped the rookie list in three-pointers made and was even close to becoming the best rookie in history in that category by falling just 2 three-pointers short of the mark which Kerry Kittles established in the 1996-97 season of 158.

His good performance throughout the year, in which he finished with statistics of 10.9 points, 2.6 rebounds and 2.2 assists in 82 games, earned him to be included in the second ideal five of the rookies of the 2007-08 season, chosen by the league's coaches.

Return to Barcelona

Navarro in January 2009.

Once the regular season ended, rumors began to spread about several NBA franchises interested in acquiring Navarro's services, including Memphis itself, where they were very happy with the performance of the Spanish guard throughout the year and where they did not give up his right to go to score if Navarro signed for another team in the league. However, and despite the fact that Navarro himself had expressed on several occasions his desire to remain in the North American league, closing at least in principle the possibility of his return to Europe, finally on June 19, 2008, his return to the league was confirmed. FC Barcelona, signing a 5-year contract at a rate of between 1.5 and 3 million euros per year, since the figure varied according to the sources, but which in any case made him one of the best-paid players on the old continent, and the highest paid in the entire history of the ACB.

Despite the fact that at first all the press pointed to economic reasons as the main reason for the Spaniard's return to his club of origin, since the salary he was going to receive, which made him the highest paid player in the entire history of the basketball section of FC Barcelona to which it was necessary to add the fact that with his return he would face the debt of 3 million euros that he contracted with Barça for his decision to go to the NBA, The player himself assured in the press conference after signing his contract that he was not returning for money but for sentimental reasons.

On August 17, 2018, FC Barcelona announced the retirement of Navarro, the most important player in Barça history, with 35 titles and 20 seasons (1997-2007 and from 2008 to 2018), in which he achieved, between other titles, two Euroleagues, eight Leagues, seven Cups, one Korac and five Super Cups.

Season 2008-09

Navarro's official debut in his new stage as a FC Barcelona player took place in the match that his team played against TAU Cerámica corresponding to the semifinals of the 2008 ACB Super Cup in which he was one of the most outstanding players with 16 points that, however, did not serve to prevent the defeat of the Barça club by 73-70. In December 2008, in the match between the Barça team and Real Madrid, he became the second player who would have played the most games in the ACB league wearing the FC Barcelona shirt with 377 games, surpassing Andrés Jiménez (376) and only behind Juan Antonio San Epifanio (422).

The first big event of the season came in mid-February 2009 with the 2009 Copa del Rey basketball match. In the quarterfinals, Navarro had one of the best performances of the season, contributing with his 28 points and 10 assists in FC Barcelona's victory over Real Madrid (75-83). Two days later, the Barça team would fall in the semifinals against TAU Vitoria 77-90 in a match in which Navarro was his team's top scorer with 19 points.

In the middle of March, Navarro scored his triple number 628 in ACB in a match against Vivemenorca, which allowed him to surpass Juan Antonio San Epifanio at the head of the ranking for the maximum number of three-point baskets made in history of FC Barcelona.

In May, once the regular phase of the Euroleague had finished, the Spaniard was named competition MVP for the first time in his life (2nd inclusion in the ideal quintet), thanks to 14.8 points, 3.6 assists and 1.4 steals in the 20 games he played. His participation was essential for FC Barcelona to reach the Final Four with very outstanding performances such as the fifth game of the quarterfinal play-off against TAU Vitoria in which he returned to be the top scorer for his team with 19 points. In the semifinal match already in the middle of the Final Four in Berlin, FC Barcelona was defeated by CSKA Moscow (78-82) in a very intense match at the that Navarro was the second highest scorer for his team with 13 goals.

At the end of the regular phase of the ACB league, he was appointed along with his teammate Fran Vázquez, as a member of the ideal quintet of the season accompanied by Pablo Prigioni, Igor Rakocevic and Felipe Reyes. A few days before the At the end of the competition, he had managed to overcome the barrier of 5,000 points scored in the ACB League, becoming the twenty-sixth player in history to break said barrier. His numbers at the end of the regular season were 15.7 points, 1.8 rebounds and 3.3 assists in 28 games played.

After being one of the most outstanding players of his team both in the quarterfinals against Pamesa Valencia and in the semifinals against Unicaja Málaga, a tie in which he also achieved his triple 650 in the ACB, which automatically made him a historical player in the competition and the eleventh player to reach such a level, in the final against TAU Vitoria he became the most decisive player in the series (15.25 points, 6 assists, 2 rebounds and 17, An average ACB rating of 75 points, especially in the last game of the same in which with 19 points, 9 assists and an ACB rating of 28 he sealed the final (3-1) in favor of the Catalan team. to be designated for the first time in his life as MVP of the league finals.

Season 2009-10
Navarro with FC Barcelona.

Before the start of the 2009-10 season, when the player was with the national team playing the Eurobasket in Poland, there was news that the Memphis Grizzlies relinquished their rights to the Spaniard, so the player He was free, in the event of his hypothetical return to the NBA, to freely negotiate with the club that he considered appropriate without the Grizzlies being able to exercise the right of first refusal.

He started the season scoring 19 points against Xacobeo Blu:Sens and 24 points against Power Electronics Valencia, getting a PIR of 30.

After his team qualified for the Copa del Rey, they faced Cajasol Sevilla in the quarterfinals, playing 29 minutes and scoring 15 points that would help the blaugranas win 77-72. In the semifinals they would play against Power Electronics Valencia, Navarro contributing 12 points in 35 minutes of play, qualifying for the final in which they would play against Real Madrid. In the final, Juan Carlos scored 9 points as Barça won 80-61. Barcelona won their 21st Copa del Rey and Navarro his fourth, where his teammate Fran Vázquez was voted MVP.

After a spectacular season in the Euroleague, where Navarro was included in the Euroleague Best Quintet, Barça qualified for the Final Four in Paris. In the semifinal, they faced CSKA Moscow, the Catalan team winning 64-54 with 10 points from Navarro. who helped the Barça exhibition to win 86-68, getting the 2nd Euroleague in history. Regal Barcelona arrived as the top favorite for the ACB League playoffs, after achieving a 31-3 record and having won the Euroleague and Copa del Rey. In addition, before the playoffs began, Navarro was selected in the ACB All-Star Quintet, along with his teammates Ricky Rubio and Erazem Lorbek. After overwhelmingly winning Gran Canaria 2014 (2-0) and Unicaja Málaga (3-0), they reached the long-awaited final against Caja Laboral Baskonia. In the final, Barça found themselves completely outmatched in the games, the Basques winning by a resounding 3-0, in one of the biggest surprises in the finals. Navarro had good games, highlighting the last one where he scored 18 points.

Lower Categories

Juan Carlos Navarro has been a fixture in all the national calls since he was first called up for the cadet category and he has been an outstanding player in all of them.

His first international success came when he won the gold medal at the Junior European Championship in Varna in 1998, although without a doubt his media explosion occurred when he became one of the most outstanding players of the national team that managed to win the title of world champions in the Junior World Championship in Lisbon in 1999, after defeating the United States team in the final in front of more than 16,000 spectators, which in all bets started as a 94-87 favorite. Barcelona amazed locals and strangers in Lisbon, among other things due to the use of a new technical resource. A kind of tray to which he gave a huge arc that allowed him to outwit the rival defenses and that would later be known as "the bomb"; also becoming the nickname of the player himself. Navarro was named MVP of the final and was also included in the ideal five of the tournament.

On November 14, 1999, he participated in the "All Stars" in Manresa, which pitted the national team against a selection of the best foreigners participating in the ACB league.

Absolute selection

Olympic Games

Juan Carlos Navarro in July 2018.

Her official debut with the national team took place on September 17, 2000, at the Sydney Olympic Games.

Holds the record, later equaled by Rudy Fernández and Pau Gasol, of having participated in five Olympic events (Sydney 2000, Athens 2004, Beijing 2008, London 2012 and Rio 2016), achieving two silver medals in Beijing 2008 and London 2012 (after losing both finals to the United States), and a bronze medal in Rio 2016, winning the consolation final against Australia.

Eurobasketball

The international tournaments where Navarro has won the most medals have been in the Eurobasket.

His first experience in a Eurobasket was in Turkey 2001 where he had very outstanding performances that led Spain to play the match for the bronze medal against Dirk Nowitzki's Germany. That day Navarro was one of the most important figures in the team, managing to score 27 points and being the great architect, along with his teammate Pau Gasol who scored 31, for Spain to win the bronze medal. That championship ended with a average of 15 points and 3.3 assists in the 7 games he played.

The following edition of the Eurobasket, Sweden 2003, meant for Navarro climbing another step and winning the first of his silver medals. He was once again an essential piece for Spain to reach the final, which they ultimately lost to Lithuania with 18 points from Navarro that were not enough before the great game played by Arvydas Macijauskas and Eurelijus Zukauskas on the Lithuanian side. That Eurobasket, the player finished with an average of 16.2 points and 1.3 assists in 6 games played.

In 2005, at the Eurobasket held in Belgrade, it was the first and to date only time that Navarro failed to win a medal in his participation in this tournament. Spain once again reached the semifinals of the competition with great performances by the Catalan player, such as the 35 points he got against Latvia or the 36 against Croatia. In the semifinals Spain faced Germany. Navarro was the best in Spain that day with a total of 27 points, which, however, were not enough to offset Nowitzki's great game, who also scored 27 points, but scored the decisive basket with 3 seconds to go when Germany was trailing by 1 point and to which Spain could not respond. The fight for the bronze medal was against the French team. Spain could not overcome the blow of the defeat the previous day against Germany and was resoundingly defeated by a resounding 68-98. That day Navarro scored 17 points, which helped him to finish as the 2nd highest scorer in the competition with 25.2 points per game, only behind the German Nowitzki (26.1).

In the 2007 Eurobasket he arrived injured at the start of the tournament with a groin problem. In the quarterfinals against Germany he already had an outstanding role with 12 points in 14 minutes of play, but it was in the semifinal in the one who was the top scorer of the game with 23 points (5/6 in triples). In the final Navarro did not score and Spain was defeated 59-60 against Russia.

In the 2009 Eurobasket, he was part of the Spanish team that won the first European gold.

In the Eurobasket of Lithuania 2011 they reached the gold medal. In the quarterfinals he scored 26 points against Slovenia. Two days later, before the revelation of the tournament, the Macedonian team, he scored 35 points (19 of them in the third quarter, a record in a Eurobasket). In the final he scored 27 points leading the Spanish team to the gold medal. At the end of the match, the 7th of the team was named MVP of the match, MVP of the tournament and was included in the ideal quintet along with his teammate Pau Gasol and the players Bo Mccalebb (Macedonia), Tony Parker (France) and Andrei Kirilenko (Russia). He was Navarro's first MVP in a Eurobasket, at the age of 31, after scoring 11.4 points and 1.4 assists per game.

He played his last international game, exactly 17 years after his debut, on September 17, 2017, in the game that meant the achievement of the bronze medal against Russia in the EuroBasket 2017, the tenth medal of his career with the national team.

World Championships

The 2002 World Cup in Indianapolis was the first time that Navarro had the opportunity to participate in this type of tournament. He arrived at the event with just turned 22 years old and the band of being an explosive player capable of revolutionizing any game at any given time. The World Cup was a bittersweet result for Navarro along with the rest of the Spanish team, since although they achieved very important results such as the victory against Yugoslavia in the first phase, a team that was ultimately proclaimed champion of the tournament, or the one achieved against the United States with a squad made up entirely of NBA stars and which gave Spain fifth place final in the tournament with a sensational game by Navarro who was the top scorer of the game with 26 points, the defeat against Germany in the quarterfinals (in a game in which Navarro was once again the top scorer with 21 points) It was a great disappointment since the occasion was presented as a historic appointment to have participated in the fight for the medals and even from many media they were given the role of favorites to play at least the final.

Pepu Hernández, the coach who took Spain and Navarro to the World Championship of Japan 2006

The bad taste in his mouth that that fifth place in Indianapolis left him was completely forgotten 4 years later after the dispute of the 2006 edition in Japan, since Navarro achieved the most important title of all those he possesses when he was proclaimed world champion in a tournament in which he was one of the most outstanding players. His debut in the championship came against New Zealand. Navarro scored 16 points and helped Spain to a comfortable victory. During the group stage of the competition, Spain's superiority was overwhelming over all its rivals, which meant that the minutes of games were fairly distributed among all the teams, therefore that the individual numbers of the players were not spectacular on almost any occasion. Even so, Navarro had quite outstanding performances such as the 19 points he got against Germany or the 18 against Japan. In addition, during this group stage, the player reached his 100th game with the national team in the match that the national team played against Angola.

In the final phase, Spain overcame the round of 16 against Serbia (with 7 points from Navarro) and the quarterfinals against Lithuania (with a great performance from the Catalan who scored 22 points) with much less difficulty than expected. In the semifinals against Argentina, Navarro was perfectly neutralized by the Albiceleste defense that left him with just 4 points. This gray performance was soon forgotten because in the final against Greece, Navarro took over the reins of the team at a very delicate moment, already that the top star of the team, Pau Gasol, had been injured the day before and could not play the final His 20 points, together with Garbajosa's 20 and the exceptional defense of the entire team led Spain to win by an indisputable 70-47, proclaiming themselves world basketball champion for the first time in history. Navarro finished that World Cup as the second highest scorer for Spain with an average of 14 points and 2.1 assists per game.

In the 2010 Mundobasket in Turkey, the Spanish coach, Sergio Scariolo, included him in the list of 15 players, selected from among the 24 previous players, who would be concentrated in Las Palmas prior to the championship. Spain finished 6th, being eliminated in the quarterfinals against Serbia and losing to Argentina in the match for 5th place. Navarro was one of the best on the team, averaging 16.9 points and 3 assists in 24 minutes per game.
