Juan Carlos Ablanedo Iglesias (Mieres, Asturias, Spain, September 2, 1963), known as Ablanedo II, is a Spanish former soccer player who played goalkeeper. He developed his entire sports career at Real Sporting de Gijón and was international with the Spanish team, with which he played in the 1986 and 1990 World Cups.

Trajectory

He entered the Mareo Soccer School at the age of ten and, after passing through the children's and youth teams of Real Sporting de Gijón, he joined Sporting de Gijón Atlético in 1981. He debuted in the First Division with the rojiblanco team on January 2, 1983, after the expulsion of goalkeeper José Aurelio Rivero during a match played at the El Molinón stadium against R. C. D. Español. In the 1983-84 season he defended Sporting's goal again in the corresponding matches to the last two days of competition, against Real Betis Balompié and C. D. Málaga, as well as during the League Cup.

Facing the 1984-85 campaign, he was definitively incorporated into Sporting's first team and played thirty-three games in which he conceded twenty-two goals, a figure that helped him win his first Zamora Trophy for the goalkeeper with the fewest goals scored of the year In the 1985-86 season he repeated the same success after conceding twenty-seven goals in the thirty-four league games he played. In addition, on September 18, 1985 he made his debut in the UEFA Cup in the tie for the 1/32 final that faced the Asturian team with F. C. Colonia. In August 1987 he suffered an injury to his left ankle during a friendly match that kept him away from the pitch for three months; 1988-89 season, a tear in the external lateral meniscus and the anterior cruciate ligament of the right knee caused him to miss the last five months of the competition.

After completing his military service in the summer of 1989, his return to the Sporting goal came on matchday 7 of the 1989-90 season in a match played at the La Romareda stadium against Real Zaragoza. At the end of that same campaign he won his third Zamora Trophy with twenty-five goals conceded in the thirty-one games he played. In April 1991 he suffered a new cruciate ligament tear, this time in his left knee, due to which he remained seven months off. His recovery coincided with the good form of his teammate Emilio Isierte, who went on to set the unbeaten record for a goalkeeper at Sporting —697 minutes—, for which reason he did not participate in any match of the 1991-92 season.

He regained ownership in the 1992-93 campaign, although a jaw fracture produced during a Copa del Rey match against Rayo Vallecano from Madrid caused his absence between January and March 1993. In the 1993- 94 expanded his history of injuries with a dislocation in his right shoulder that forced him to undergo surgery to fix the position of the clavicle, which is why he was unable to compete for a period of five months. Despite the fact that He played regularly in the following three seasons —thirty-four games in 1994-95, thirty-six in 1995-96 and forty in 1996-97—, he was relegated to substitution by coach José Manuel Díaz Novoa after matchday 21 of the 1997-98 campaign in an attempt to reverse the course of the team, which had not yet added any victories in the competition. Their last match in the First Division took place on March 15, 1998 at the El Molinón against Real Oviedo.

After Sporting was relegated to the Second Division, he decided to continue for another year at the club, although he only intervened in two games in the 1998-99 season. At the end of the season, he ended his sports career after of military during fifteen campaigns in the Asturian group.

National team

He was international with the Spanish team in the youth and under-21 categories, with which he won the 1986 European Championship after beating Italy in the final. In it, he stopped two of the three shots from the Italian penalty spot in the shootout that decided the tournament champion. With the senior team he made a total of four appearances and made his debut on September 24, 1986 during a match against Greece held at the El Molinón stadium. In addition, he was called up to participate in the 1986 Mexico and Italy 1990 World Cups, although he did not play any games in both events.
