Josep Maria (or José María) Pou Serra (Mollet del Vallès, Barcelona, November 19, 1944) is an actor and Spanish theater director.

Biography

Beginnings

Josep Maria was born in 1944 in the Barcelona town of Mollet del Vallés. After passing through the Labor University of Tarragona and taking his first steps in amateur and university theater, in 1967 he went to Madrid to study at the Royal School of Dramatic Art. At this time he participated in his first professional productions, including his debut in 1968 with the historic Marat Sade directed by Adolfo Marsillach.

Theater

After finishing his studies in 1970, he joined the main company of the María Guerrero National Theater under the guidance of José Luis Alonso. That same year she made her debut with Romance de lobos , by Valle-Inclán.

Throughout his career he has starred in around fifty theater productions, directed by prestigious directors such as Calixto Bieito in King Lear, Josep Maria Flotats (in La gavina and in Àngels a Amèrica), Mario Gas (Golfus de Roma), Pilar Miró (The suspicious truth) or the aforementioned Marsillach.

In 2004, he received the National Theater Award from the Generalitat of Catalonia for his role in the play Celobert, directed by Ferrán Madico, and for his reading of Bartleby, l' scribe.

In 2005 he presented his personal project to date, directed, starring and produced by himself: La cabra o ¿quién es Sylvia? (La Cabra o qui és Sylvia? in Catalan). With this show he received multiple awards, including the National Theater Award, the Terenci Moix International Award and four Max Awards (best stage director, best show, best theatrical adaptation and best impresario).

He has served as artistic director of the La Latina Theater in Madrid and the Romea Theater in Barcelona.

Cinema and television

In parallel to his theater career, he has worked regularly in film and television. Her debut on the big screen was in 1963 with La mujer prohibida by José Luis Ruiz Marcos. Since then he has worked with some directors such as José Luis Garci, Carlos Saura, Ventura Pons, Fernando Colomo, Pilar Miró, Montxo Armendáriz, Francesc Bellmunt, Pere Portabella, José María Forqué or Alejandro Amenábar, who directed him in the Oscar-winning Mar inside.

In 1964 he made his television premiere on TVE's Estudio 1, giving life to the character of Felipe IV in the performance of Las Meninas by Buero Vallejo. Subsequently, several more jobs would come on the small screen, generally in fiction series, among which his leading roles in Estació d'enllaç on TV3 (1994), Policías, in the heart of the street on Antena 3 (1999), Ángels i Sants on TV3 (2005) or Nit i dia (2017).

Radius

A great fan of radio, in his youth he created several musical programs, winning a contest for announcers organized by Radio Barcelona. Between July 1985 and September 1999 he made, together with Concha Barral, a weekly program on Radio 1 of Radio Nacional de España, entitled La calle 42 dedicated to musical theater. Later, in 2006, he collaborated in SER Cataluña with a theater section, first in the program Tot és comèdia and later in L & # 39; Hora L of Radio Barcelona.
