Joseph is a theophoric masculine proper name and means “Yahweh will add”. It is of Aramaic origin (Yahveh leyosif) and has spread in Western culture due to the influence of Christianity, being the adoptive father of Jesus Christ.

It comes from the Bible, so it has a religious and traditionalist connotation. In Hebrew literature, Joseph goes from being a commoner in a foreign prison to a royal position in the powerful Egyptian Empire.

The festival of San José is on March 19 and on May 1, San José Obrero, worker's day, is celebrated. Its female variants are Josefa and Antonio

Etymology

Joseph is the Hispanization of the Latin Josephus / Joseph, and this from the Greek Ἰωσήφ (Ioséf), in turn from the Hebrew יוֹסֵף (Yoséf) which is translated “He will add.” However, it is likely that, like all other Hebrew names beginning with the syllable "jo", it has Yahweh as the first element, and is a contraction of the original form "Jehoseph".

The meaning of this name found in the Tanakh says:

Then Elohim of Rachel remembered. Elohim heard her and opened her breast, and she conceived and bore a son. And he said, "Elohim has taken away my reproach" and named him Joseph, saying, "Add me Yahweh another son"
Genesis 30,22-24.

Pepe

The hypocorstic in the Hispanic world of the name José is Pepe, and it has traditionally been explained that they are the acronyms for Pater Putativus in reference to José de Nazaret. Another hypothesis, the most plausible, indicates that it is based on an earlier translation Josephus and it was originally Josepe like the Italian name Giuseppe this was reduced to “Pepe” due to phonetic proximity.
