José Luis Araneda Carrasco (Chillán, Chile, August 28, 1848 - Santiago, Chile, January 19, 1912) was a Chilean soldier, also known in the Chilean Army as "Hero de Sangra", he participated in the War of the Pacific and in the Civil War of 1891.

Beginnings

He enlisted in the army at a very young age in 1865, at the outbreak of the war against Spain. Between 1867 and 1871 he participated in the pacification of Araucanía, receiving the rank of second lieutenant at the end of his commission in that campaign.

Pacific War

In 1875, he was assigned to the Buin 1st Line battalion, with which he was present in all the campaigns of the War of the Pacific. He takes part in the Chilean landing in Pisagua on November 2, 1879 and is promoted to captain in 1880. He participates in the Battle of Tacna and in the Battle of Arica; He also made the entire campaign for the capture of Lima and remained in Peru with his regiment after taking this city, during the so-called Campaña de la Sierra.

During this campaign and commanding a detachment of the Buin Regiment, he was involved in the Battle of Sangra on June 26, 1881, in which he was nicknamed "Hero of Sangra &#3. 4; when resisting against seven hundred Peruvian soldiers.

Civil war and retreat

He participated in the Civil War of 1891 on the government side, which caused him to be called to retire after the triumph of the revolutionary forces in September 1891. He was reinstated in 1899 and commissioned in the Rancagua battalion where he remained until his final retirement in 1907.

He died in Santiago on January 19, 1912. His remains rest in the patios of the Infantry Regiment No. 1 Buin of the 1st Line of Colonel Juan de Dios Vial Santelices.
