John D. Carmack II (born August 20, 1970) is an American game programmer and co-founder of id Software. He was the main programmer for id games such as Commander Keen, Wolfenstein 3D, Doom, Quake, Rage and their sequels. He is known for his innovations in 3D graphics, he is the founder and principal engineer of Armadillo Aerospace, a company that builds space rockets. In August 2013 he took the position of Director of Technology at the Oculus VR company, which was bought by what was Facebook (currently Meta) in 2014.

Biography

Carmack grew up in Kansas City and was interested in computers from a very early age. At the age of 14, Carmack and other friends tried to steal an Apple II but were caught and Carmack spent a year in a children's home, according to his psychologist "he had no empathy for other human beings." When he left him, his parents bought him an Apple II computer and he locked himself in his room for days, where he began to program his own games. He studied at the University of Kansas for two semesters before dropping out to work as a freelance programmer. Softdisk, a game company, hired Carmack by teaming him up with John Romero, another future member of id Software. At Softdisk they produced the first of the Commander Keen series of games in 1990, before Carmack and the rest of the team left the company to create id.

Carmack's skills as a programmer led to the development of the first First Person Shooter or FPS) games, Wolfenstein 3D, Doom and Quake, among others. Game engines produced by Carmack have always taken advantage of PC hardware developments before other developers. Carmack is the author of several algorithmic techniques for computer graphics, in particular surface caching.

Recognized as one of the technical leaders in the world of computer gaming, Carmack's game engines have been licensed and used in some of the most influential first-person shooters in the history of the genre, including Half -Life and Medal of Honor.

His last work at id software before moving to Oculus Vr was the graphics engine called "id Tech 5". This graphics engine is part of the id software title called "Rage" It came out in October 2011. Later they will use the "id Tech 6" in "Doom 4".
