Johannes Thienemann
Johannes Thienemann (born November 12, 1863 in Gangloffsömmern, Thuringia, and died April 12, 1938 in Rossitten, East Prussia, now part of Russia) was a German ornithologist.
Thienemann dedicated his research to bird migration, an important topic in ornithology that remains poorly understood today. Among others, he introduced systematic bird ringing as a basic technique for researching migratory behavior. He was popularly known as 'Vogelprofessor'. (professor-bird) and established the world's first ornithological research station in Rossiten, East Prussia (now Rybachy, Russia) in 1901. This ornithological station, which still exists, achieved notable prestige through the publications and reports made there by notable scientists. As a result of the Second World War, it was closed in 1944, although in 1956 it was put back into operation by Soviet researchers. Subsequently, the Russian Academy of Sciences in Saint Petersburg, as the body responsible for the scientific station, and due to the poor economic situation, suspended all subsidies, so the research is largely maintained through donations and thanks to funding from the Heinz Sielmann Foundation.
