Joaquín de Arteaga y Echagüe
Joaquín Ignacio de Arteaga y Echagüe (San Sebastián, September 5, 1870-Madrid, January 4, 1947) was a Spanish nobleman, politician and parliamentarian, head of the House of Infantado and therefore, XVII Duke of Infantado.
Biography
He was born in San Sebastián on September 5, 1870, as the only male child of General Andrés Avelino de Arteaga y Silva, VII Marquis of Valmediano, and María de Belén Echagüe y Méndez de Vigo, daughter of the I Count of Serrallo. In 1882, his father inherited from his great-uncle Mariano Téllez-Girón (who died without children) the dukedom of Infantado (GEPC) and seven other titles because the Crown did not want the numerous honors of the late duke to pass to a single heir. He studied with the Jesuits at Chamartín de la Rosa and at the Collège de Namur, in Belgium.
In 1894, his father gave him the county of Corres and the marquisate of Santillana, a historical title of the heirs of the Infantado. He took advantage of his fortune to create industrial companies, Hidráulicas Santillana, CEGUI. A supporter of neutrality in the First World War, he was a deputy for twenty-five years and a senator during the reign of Alfonso XIII. He was a great gentleman of Spain with exercise and servitude of this last monarch, to whom he was united by an intimate friendship, forming part of his closest circle.
Joaquín de Arteaga died in 1947.
