The Joan Gamper Trophy is a summer football tournament organized by the Barcelona Football Club annually dedicated to the memory of Joan Gamper. This tournament began in 1966 thanks to the initiative of Enric Llaudet, then president of the club. It is held at the Camp Nou during the second half of August, with the aim of presenting the F. C. Barcelona squad to its public with a view to the season that begins. Exceptionally, the 1990, 1996 and 2023 editions were held at the Montjuic Stadium because the organizer's stadium was subject to renovations. The 2021 edition was held at the Estadi Johan Cruyff as a recommendation from the Generalitat of Catalonia as a result of the pandemic caused by Covid-19.
Over time the game format has been modified; Until 1996 it consisted of a quadrangular, in which two semifinals and the final match were played, plus the match for third place. However, since 1997 the club decided to shorten the duration of the tournament, playing a single match, given the saturation of the calendar during the preseason.
The trophy itself is made of sterling silver (around 800 grams), 10 kilos of marble for the base and 5 microns of gold for the finish.
In 1982, S. C. Internacional became the first non-European team to win the tournament, and the only one in all the editions played.
Valencia C. F., C. D. Tenerife, RKV Malinas, and FC Porto (ordered according to their historical classification in the tournament) are the only teams that have won the only edition they have played. All of them after winning the two games played in a quadrangular format. There is no team that has played more than one tournament and won them all.
The current Joan Gamper Trophy has a precedent in the Gamper Cup, a tournament that the club established in 1913 in honor of the club's founder, after leaving the presidency. The tournament, which was to be held annually in September, was only played that year, with a 4-1 victory for F. C. Barcelona over Internacional F. C.
Lionel Messi is the top scorer in the history of this trophy with 9 goals.
