Joachim of Denmark, Count of Monpezat (born Joachim Holger Waldemar Christian; Copenhagen, June 7, 1969), is the youngest son of Queen Margaret II of Denmark and Henry de Laborde of Monpezat. He is prince of Denmark since his birth. He currently occupies the sixth place on the Danish throne after his brother Frederick, Crown Prince of Denmark and his nephews Princes Christian, Elizabeth, Vincent and Josephine of Denmark. At birth he was in third place after his mother and his older brother.

Biography

Birth

He was born on June 7, 1969 at the Copenhagen University Hospital (Rigshospitalet).

Baptism

He was baptized on July 15, 1969 in the Cathedral of Saint Clement in Aarhus, thus being the first member of the royal family to be baptized outside of Copenhagen.

Her godparents and godmothers were: Princess Benedicta of Denmark (her maternal aunt), Juan Bautista de Laborde de Monpezat (her paternal uncle), King Harald V of Norway and Princess Christina of Sweden.

Studies

Joaquin received classes at Amalienborg Palace from 1974 to 1976. Then, from 1976 to 1982, he attended a private school in Copenhagen. In the period 1982-1983 the prince studied as a boarding student at the École des Roches in Normandy (France).

Between 1991-1993, Prince Joachim completed his studies in agricultural economics at the Næsgaard Classenske Agerbrugskole on the island of Falster.

Prince Joachim's first language is Danish; He also speaks French, English and German.

In addition to his agricultural background, he has worked for AP Moller Maersk Group in Hong Kong and France in the period 1993-1995. Today, Prince Joachim owns the Schackenborg mansion.

Military career

He began his military career in 1987 as a recruit in the Queen's own regiment. In 1988 he became a sergeant and a year later an engineering lieutenant. In 1990 he earned the rank of first lieutenant of the reserve and in 1992 he was named captain of the reserve. He currently remains active in the defense reserve.

Diplomatic career

After a period working as Defense Attaché at the Danish Embassy in Paris, Prince Joachim will assume the new position in the Ministry of Defense on September 1, 2023 as defense industry attaché at the Danish Embassy in Paris. Washington D.C.. Their work, as reported by the Danish Court, will consist of "helping in the coming years to strengthen the cooperation of the defense industry with the United States and Canada."

Wedding

On November 18, 1995, he married Alejandra Cristina Manley, a citizen of Hong Kong, in the chapel of Frederiksborg Castle, near Copenhagen.

Divorce

On September 16, 2004, they announced their separation, although the couple did not formally divorce until April 8, 2005. Alexandra received the title of Countess of Frederiksborg from the Queen of Denmark.

Wedding

On October 3, 2007, the prince announced his engagement to María Cavallier. The wedding took place on May 24, 2008 at the Møgeltønder church in the municipality of Tønder, south of the Jutland peninsula.

Other information

  • His first girlfriend, the exmodel Iben Kadziola, died in 2015.
  • He's one of the godfathers of his nephew Prince Cristián.
  • In the summer of 2020, he was operated in emergency at the University Hospital of Toulouse, after suffering a stroke.
