Jacona de Plancarte
Jacona de Plancarte is a Mexican city, head of the municipality of Jacona in the state of Michoacán de Ocampo. Located in the northwest of the state, on the northern slope of the Sierra de Patambán, which is part of the transversal Volcanic axis, it is located at an altitude of 1,577 meters. It was founded by Fray Sebastián de Trasierra in 1555, although there are buildings and cave paintings that are more than 3,000 years old. Jacona was the symbol of life and death, the symbol of humanity, and was one of the first pre-Hispanic towns entrusted to the Spanish.
Toponymy
Jacona is a word of Purepecha origin that means “place where the gods meet"
Just as the Spanish transformed the spelling of words like México into Mexico, Xalisco into Jalisco, or Xallapan into Jalapa, the word Jacona was originally spelled Xacona. This derives from the original word Xucunan, which in tecuexe meant "place of flowers and vegetables."
Xacona was established in a Chichimeca region (tecuexe), bordering the Purépecha kingdom (the misnamed "Tarascans"). This explains why other neighboring localities have porhepeni names. The main hill in front of Jacona, for example, is called Curutarán.
Curutarán is a Purépecha word, made up of the words: "ku", to get together; "rhu", projection, point; "tarha", to play ball; and "an", gods. It means then: "Point where the gods meet to play ball". This ball game was not an ordinary game, but the 'heavenly ball game'.
