Istanbul is one of the 81 provinces into which Turkey is divided, administered by a governor appointed by the central government. Its population is 15,733,812 inhabitants and its commercial capital, the city of Istanbul, has 13,203,696 inhabitants.

The province of Istanbul is located in northwest Turkey. It is surrounded by the provinces of Tekirdağ to the west, and Kocaeli to the east, the Black Sea to the north, and the Sea of Marmara to the south. The Bosphorus Strait divides the province (as well as its provincial capital) into two parts, one in Asia and the other in Europe. Its capital is the city of Istanbul, former capital of the Ottoman and Eastern Roman Empires, with the name of Constantinople.
