Israel is a Hebrew name (ישׂראל, Yisra'el or Yiśrā'ēl, in Arabic إسرائيل, Isrā& #39;īl) whose traditional meaning is "he who fights with God", although other etymologies have been suggested. Known in the Levant from the Middle Bronze Age (Eblaite: 𒅖𒊏𒅋, išrail and Ugaritic: 𐎊𐎌𐎗𐎛𐎍, yšrʾil), according to the Bible it was the name given by an angel to the patriarch Jacob, after fighting both in the river Jabbok (Genesis 32: 22-28).
