ISO/IEC 5218

The ISO/IEC 5218 standard defines the representation of the human sexes by means of a one-character numeric code:

• 0 = unknown
• 1 = male,
• 2 = female,
• 9 = not applicable.

This standard is used, for example, by the French National Statistics Institute (INSEE).
