The ISO 4217 is an international standard published by the ISO with the aim of defining three-letter codes for all currencies in the world.
This eliminates the confusion caused by some currency names such as dollar, franc, peso, krona or pound, which are used in many countries but have very different exchange rates.
The first two letters of the code are the two letters of the country code of the currency according to the ISO 3166-1 standard and the third is usually the initial of the currency itself.
In addition to the ISO 4217 standard, there is also the ISO 3166 standard which gives a three-digit code to each country and a three-digit code to each currency. However, the ISO 4217 standard is the most widely used, and by far, mainly because it is much more intuitive. The numerical code is used in cases where Latin characters are not used.
This rule also defines the relationships between the main monetary unit and its subdivisions. Often these subdivisions are in cents or hundredths, although tenths or thousandths are also quite common. Some coins do not have subdivisions. In other cases, the main monetary unit has so little value that the fractional currency is no longer used (for example, the Japanese yen cent). Mauritania does not use a decimal subdivision, since 1 ouguiya is 5 jums, and Madagascar has the ariary, which is equivalent to 5 iraimbilanja.
The ISO 4217 standard also includes codes for precious metals (gold, silver, palladium and platinum) and other definitions used in the financial world. There are also special codes for evidence (XTS), and to indicate non-monetary transactions (XXX). All these codes start with the letter “X”. Precious metals use "X" and the chemical symbol for the metal (for example silver is XAG). ISO 3166 never assigns country codes starting with "X", so ISO 4217 can use codes starting with that letter without risking collisions.
