Contenido Islets are small islands where humans do not normally live due to their small size. The name comes from islette, a diminutive of "isle" in old French. Despite the fact that the islets are without human population, they belong to a State.
When an island is very small, it is called an islet.
Synonymous terms
- Holm or holmenused in the countries of Northern Europe.
- The term cayo is used in the Caribbean and Western Atlantic.
- In the Channel Islands, they are identified as hou.
- In Scotland and Ireland, they are called inches. In Ireland they are also known as a stumbling block (skerry).
- In Polynesia, they are known as motu.
- Farallón.
- Tidal island.
- River island (for rivers).
