Islets are small islands where humans do not normally live due to their small size. The name comes from islette, a diminutive of "isle" in old French. Despite the fact that the islets are without human population, they belong to a State.

When an island is very small, it is called an islet.

  • Holm or holmenused in the countries of Northern Europe.
  • The term cayo is used in the Caribbean and Western Atlantic.
  • In the Channel Islands, they are identified as hou.
  • In Scotland and Ireland, they are called inches. In Ireland they are also known as a stumbling block (skerry).
  • In Polynesia, they are known as motu.
  • Farallón.
  • Tidal island.
  • River island (for rivers).
