Ischaemum

Ischaemum is a genus of herbaceous plants in the Poaceae family. It is native to tropical and subtropical regions of the world.

Taxonomy

The genus was described by Carlos Linnaeus and published in the Journal of Botany, British and Foreign 66: 141. 1928.

Etymology

The generic name derives from the Greek ischaimon (astringent), a name originally given to Digitaria sanguinalis for its supposed astringent qualities.

Cytology

The basic chromosome number of the genus is x = 9 or 10, with somatic chromosome numbers 2n = 18, 20, 40, 54, 56, and 68 as there are diploid species and a polyploid series.
