Irvine (California)
Irvine, founded in 1971, is a city in Orange County in the US state of California. In 2020 it had a population of 307,670 inhabitants and a population density of 1,810.46 people per km².
Irvine is the only town in the county that is home to a campus of the University of California (UC Irvine), to which it owes much of its activity and dynamism. Its inhabitants are of diverse origin, abounding minorities of Asian, Mexican and Indian origin. Irvine enjoys one of the lowest crime rates in the United States.
Geography
According to the Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 180.5 km² (69.7 mi²), of which 179.7 km² (69.4 mi²) is land and 0.8 km² (0. 3 mi²) is water.
Education
The Irvine Unified School District operates public schools. Irvine is home to the University of California at Irvine, which is the second newest campus behind only the University of California at Merced. Other higher education institutions include Concordia University, Irvine Valley College, and an extension campus of California State University, Fullerton. Chapman University and Soka University are located in adjacent cities.
Economy
This city depends on industries. Irvine is home to the headquarters of Gateway Inc. and is the packing plant for Maruchan Inc. Instant Soup.
