IRIX

IRIX is a Unix-compatible operating system, created by Silicon Graphics for its 64-bit MIPS platform.

IRIX has particular support for 3D graphics, video, and high-bandwidth data transfer. It was one of the first versions of Unix to have a graphical user interface (GUI) for the main desktop and was widely used, due to its extremely high quality 3D graphics, in the computer animation industry and for scientific visualization, although due to technological changes and the abandonment of its development by SGI, it has lost its popularity.

There are two branches or subversions: maintenance and feature, which roughly correspond to the "stable" and "development" from other programs. The maintenance contains performance improvements and bug fixes and the feature contains new subsystems. Since 6.5.22 there is that division in "maintenance" and "feature". As of 6.5.23 a maintenance contract is required to be able to access the new updates.

On September 6, 2006, SGI announced the end of the IRIX/MIPS product line.
