The Inter-American Institute for Boys, Girls and Adolescents, as a Specialized Organization of the Organization of American States (OAS), made up of all the Member States, represents the sphere of commitment historic and permanent commitment to the rights and well-being of children and adolescents in the Americas. Between 1927 and 1962 it was known as the American International Institute for Child Protection.

Their efforts are aimed at linking their experience and trajectory with the search for innovative and lasting responses to the diversity of problems of childhood and adolescence, assuming new commitments and challenges for this purpose.

In this context, and just a few months after the 20th anniversary of the approval of the Convention on the Rights of the Child, the IIN ratifies its validity and significance and reaffirms its renewed commitment to the young generations of the region.

Objectives

Its objectives are to ensure the rights of the child both at the level of approval of the conventions and to advise on legislative and social policy measures among its member states. It provides technical advice and dissemination of the rights of the child.

Member countries: Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Cuba, Chile, Ecuador, United States, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela (all in 1927) Later: Mexico (1935), Costa Rica (1938), Paraguay (1939), Colombia (1941), Dominican Republic (1943), Honduras (1944), Guatemala (1946), Panama (1947), Nicaragua (1948) and Haiti (1949)

Organization

  • Pan American Congress of the Childthe highest level of policy and guidelines. Choose the authorities. It meets every 4 years and is integrated by IIN member countries.
  • Board of Directorsin charge of formulating general policy and ensuring compliance with the mandates of the Congress. Integrated by a representative of INN member states
  • General Directorate, responsible for the administration of IIN and carry out approved programs and actions. Named by the Secretary General of the OAS, based on a web presented by the Board of Directors. Your charge lasts 4 years, being able to be reelected once.
