The National Institute of Radio and Television of Colombia was a Colombian radio and television entity that was founded in 1964 and dissolved in 2004.

History

It was created by Decree 3267 of December 20, 1963. This decree stated:

The public broadcasting and television service provided by the Ministry of Communications will be provided from the first of April 1964 by a public establishment with patriotic, administrative and legal autonomy, which will be called the National Institute for Radio and Television.

Inravisión was in charge, among other functions, of:

  • Organize contracts with commercial companies that exploited television spaces (known as programmers).
  • Develop and implement the plans and projects adopted by the Ministry of Communications.
  • Provision of official educational, cultural and informative services by national broadcasting and television systems.

In 1993, it also took on the task of classifying the programs, which the programmers had to send 72 hours in advance in order to determine whether or not the programs were appropriate for children. As an Institute, Inravisión contributed decisively to the development of television in Colombia. However, in 1995 its program classification task was taken over by the National Television Commission (now the Communications Regulation Commission).

However, in the 1990s Inravisión was affected by continuous technical problems, which included a national blackout of all 3 channels in June 1995 (classified at the time as "the biggest bump in the 41 years of history of Inravisión); commercials issued with the wrong colors; deficiencies in signal reception, even in large cities like Cali; poorly calibrated cameras; leaks in the studies; and another 77-minute blackout of all 3 channels in December 1995.

It disappeared in its traditional form at the end of 2004, when it was liquidated under the government of President Álvaro Uribe Vélez, arguing that the large pension liability of $600 billion pesos, its technological delay and the poor economic state of Channel One, from Canal A and the Audiovisuales programmer after the public television crisis in 2004 made Inravisión unfeasible as a company.

A liquidator manager was appointed, along with a small number of staff who would receive a minimum wage until December 2005.

Currently, its operations are from the RTVC.
