Íñigo López de Mendoza (1438-1500)

Íñigo López de Mendoza (Guadalajara, 1438 – July 14, 1500) was a Spanish nobleman of the House of Mendoza, I Count of Saldaña, II Duke of Infantado, III Marquis of Santillana, III count of Real de Manzanares, and Grande de Castilla. He was the son of Diego Hurtado de Mendoza, the first duke of Infantado.

Biography

Born in the city of Guadalajara in 1438, Íñigo López de Mendoza was the son of Diego Hurtado de Mendoza, I Duke of Infantado, and his wife Brianda de Mendoza y Luna. In 1462, King Enrique IV granted him the title Count of Saldaña and upon the death of his father in 1479 he succeeded to his titles and became II Duke of Infantado, III Marquis of Santillana, III Count of Real de Manzanares and Lord of Hita and Buitrago.

On February 13, 1476, the Catholic Monarchs recognized in a document Íñigo and his wife María de Luna, as the legitimate successors of Álvaro de Luna.

He participated in the War of Granada in which he was especially active in the campaign of 1486 in which he personally participated in the conquest of Loja, Íllora and Moclín and in 1491 he signed the act of capitulation of the city.

He ordered Juan Guas to build the Palacio del Infantado in Guadalajara and finished the castle of Manzanares el Real. His descendants were Grands of the Kingdom and were often members of the Council of State.

He died on July 14, 1500 somewhere in the Castilian Crown.

Marriage and offspring

Íñigo López de Mendoza married in 1460 his third cousin María de Luna y Pimentel (d. 1502), daughter Álvaro de Luna, constable of Castile, and his wife Juana Pimentel, lady of the places of The Esteban Hambrán Tower, Villa del Prado, Alhamín and Bayuela Castle, thus uniting a great heritage.

As a result of the marriage between Íñigo López de Mendoza and María de Luna Pimentel, the following were born:

• Diego Hurtado de Mendoza de la Vega y Luna (1461-1531) that succeeded his father in all his titles.
• Alvaro de Mendoza y Luna (n. ca. 1463) who would become the third master of La Torre de Esteban Hambrán, married Teresa Carrillo de Castilla, daughter of Alfonso Carrillo de Acuña and his wife Leonor de Toledo.
• Francisca Lasso de Mendoza y Luna (n. ca. 1465), married to Luis de la Cerda and Castro, Lord of Mandayona, with succession, and in second nupcias of both was linked with Juan de Luna and Saavedra, knight diner of the Order of Santiago, alcaide and general captain of Melilla, to conceive at least Beatriz Lasso de Mendoza Luna and Saavedra that would join
