Ingolstadt is an independent city in the Upper Bavaria region in the federal state of Bavaria (Germany), located on the banks of the Danube River, 70 km from Munich.

History

New Palace (New Palace)Neues SchlossIngolstadt.

Ingolstadt was mentioned for the first time in a document of Charlemagne dated February 6, 806.

Between 1392 and 1447, the year it was united with Bavaria-Landshut, it was the capital of the Duchy of Bavaria-Ingolstadt. It was the seat of the famous University of Ingolstadt, founded by the Duke of Bavaria Louis IX in 1472. In the year 1516 William IV of Bavaria wrote and signed the Purity Law in this city. The famous city wall has only been overcome by the troops of Napoleon I.

This is where the secret sect of the Illuminati was born at the end of the XVIII century.

Ingolstadt is mentioned in Mary Shelley's celebrated work, "Frankenstein"; It is the birthplace of the monster created by the imaginary doctor Victor Frankenstein.

At the beginning of the XIX century the city, like the rest of Bavaria, became part of the Confederation of the Rhine fostered by Napoleon I. After the collapse of the Napoleonic Empire, Bavaria joins the German Confederation.

Charles de Gaulle and Mikhail Tukhachevsky were detained in this city's fortress during World War I.

The then captain Charles de Gaulle tried to evade five times, without success, since his great size (1.92 m.) made him too visible, and he was released after the armistice. Mikhail Tukhachevsky, on his fifth escape attempt, managed to return to Russia in October 1917.

Economy

It has refineries for the oil that arrives by pipeline, the automotive industry (here is the headquarters of Audi) and electronics factories.

After World War II, Audi was looking for a new headquarters and decided on this city due to its good communications.

Its proximity to Munich places Ingolstadt in one of the most important economic and industrial regions within the European Union (EU).

Sports

The city is home to the soccer club FC Ingolstadt, which currently operates in the 3. Liga, the third tier of soccer in Germany. Their stadium is the Audi Sportpark.
