ICD-10
The ICD-10 is the acronym for the International Classification of Diseases, 10th Edition corresponding to the Spanish version of the English version ICD, acronym for International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems and determines the classification and coding of diseases and a wide variety of signs, symptoms, abnormal findings, complaints, social circumstances and external causes of damage and/or illness.
On June 18, 2018, the World Health Organization published the new edition of its manual of diseases. This edition (ICD-11) entered into force in 2022 to replace the one in force since 1990.
History
The ICD is published by the World Health Organization (WHO). It deals internationally for statistical purposes related to morbidity and mortality, reimbursement systems and automatic decision support in medicine. This system is designed to promote international comparison of the collection, processing, classification and presentation of these statistics. The ICD is the central classification of the WHO Family of International Classifications (WHO-FIC).).
The ICD-10 list has its origin in the «List of causes of death», whose first edition was made by the International Institute of Statistics in 1893. The WHO took over it in 1948, in the sixth edition, the first to also include causes of morbidity. To date, the current list is the tenth, and the WHO continues to work on it.
The ICD-10 was developed in 1992 and its purpose was to track mortality statistics. WHO publishes annual minor updates and major updates every three years. On June 18, 2018, the World Health Organization published the new edition of its manual of diseases. This edition (ICD-11) entered into force in 2022 to replace the one in force since 1990.
Subsequently, some countries have created their own extensions to the ICD-10 code. For example, Australia introduced its first edition, the "ICD-10-AM" in 1998; Canada published its version in 2000, the "ICD-10-CA". Germany also has its own extension, the "CIE-10-GM".
In the US, an annex was added with the procedures classification system or ICD-10-PCS. Although they already use the procedures manual, the United States and Puerto Rico are preparing for the implementation of the Procedures Classification of Diseases to start in October 2015.

Mapping and cross-referencing with ICD-9
The eCIEmaps application at the Ministry of Health, Social Policy and Equality of Spain combines the terminology and classification resources of ICD-9-CM and ICD-10. Gives access to alphabetical indexes, tabular lists, supplementary classifications, appendices and regulatory manuals. It has an advanced search mode that allows you to locate alphabetic entries that point to any code.
Since 2014, eCIEmaps incorporates the draft of the first edition of the ICD10ES, which corresponds to the Spanish translation of the ICD10CM and ICD10PCS classifications, published by the National Center for Health Statistics and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Service, for diagnoses and procedures, respectively. The translation has been carried out by the Ministry of Health, Social Services and Equality and validated in collaboration with the autonomous communities through the ICD-10-ES Technical Unit and with the participation of clinicians and experts from 17 Scientific Societies. The ICD-10-ES will replace the ICD-9-CM as the reference classification for clinical coding in Spain from January 2016 by agreement of the Interterritorial Council on March 21, 2013. The eCIEmaps already has a mobile mapping browser (correspondences or equivalences between codes) to compare the GEM (General Equivalence Mappings) equivalences code by code between CIE9MC and CIE10ES of diagnoses and procedures.
