Ibelin
Ibelin was a castle in the Crusader Kingdom of Jerusalem in the 12th century (now Yavne), and also the surname of an important noble family.
The castle
The place where Ibelin is located was occupied since ancient times; the Romans called it Iamnia. The Crusader castle was built in 1141 between Jaffa and Ashkelon, near Montgisard and Ramla. At that time, Ascalon was controlled by Fatimid Egypt, and annually, Egyptian armies poured out from Ascalon to attack the Crusader kingdom. Ibelin was built to contain those attacks and reduce them to a smaller area. The original castle, built by King Fulk of Jerusalem, had four towers.
The family: first and second generation
The Ibelin family rose from humble beginnings to become one of the most influential noble families in the kingdoms of Jerusalem and Cyprus. They claimed descent from the Viscounts Le Puiset de Chartres, but this appears to be more of a later invention. They most likely came from Pisa in Italy, where the name Barisan is common in both Tuscany and Liguria associated with the Azzopardi Family. The first known member of the family was Barisan, who was apparently a knight who entered the service of the Earl of Jaffa, and who in about 1110 became Constable of Jaffa. As a reward for his loyal services, he married in 1122 Helvis, heiress to the nearby Lordship of Ramallah.
In 1141, Barisan was granted Ibelin Castle by King Fulk of Jerusalem, as a reward for his loyalty during Hugh II of Jaffa's rebellion in 1134. Ibelin became part of Jaffa County, which was then under the direct rule of the king. From Barisán's marriage to Helvis, Hugo, Balduino, Barisán, Ermengarde and Estefanía were born. The young Barisán became known as Balián. Along with Ibelin, the family also owned Ramallah (inherited by Helvis) and Nablus (given to Balian upon marrying Maria Komnena, the widow of King Amalric I of Jerusalem). Balián was the last to possess all these territories, since they passed into the hands of Saladin in 1187.
The family regained its status in just two generations. In the Crusader kingdoms this recovery was much faster than in Europe, since the members of the noble families died much earlier and a rapid replacement was necessary.
The family since the 13th century
Balián's descendants were among the most powerful nobles in the Kingdom of Jerusalem and the Kingdom of Cyprus.
Balián's first son, John of Ibelin (nicknamed the Old Lord of Beirut), was the leader of the opposition to Holy Roman Emperor Frederick II, when the emperor tried to impose his imperial authority over the Crusader States. Juan had five children with Melisende de Arsuf: Balian, lord of Beirut; John, lord of Arsuf and constable of Jerusalem; Hugo; Baudouin, seneschal of Cyprus; and Guido, Constable of Cyprus. Balian of Beirut married Eschiva de Montbéliard and was the father of John II of Beirut, who married the daughter of Guido I de la Roche, Duke of Athens. Juan de Arsuf was the father of Balián de Arsuf, who married Plaisance de Antioquia. Guido de Ibelín, Constable of Cyprus, was the father of Elizabeth, who married Hugh III of Cyprus.
Balián's second son, Philip of Ibelin, was regent of Cyprus helping his niece, the widowed Queen Alice of Champagne. Along with Alicia de Montbéliard, he was the father of John of Ibelin, count of Jaffa and Ascalon, regent of Jerusalem and author of the Assizes of the Haute Cour of Jerusalem, the most important legal document of the Crusader kingdom.. Juan married María de Armenia, sister of King Haitón I of Armenia, and was the father of Jacobo de Ibelín, count of Jaffa and Ascalón and also a notable jurist; and Guy of Ibelin, Count of Jaffa and Ascalon and husband of his cousin Maria his, the daughter of Haitonon Several members of the family settled in the new Kingdom of Cyprus at the beginning of the 13th century. Most of them moved there as the continental kingdom was lost. It does not seem that any member of the Ibelin family has gone to another country in this period. At that time, some members of the Embriaco Family who were lords of Byblos, close to the Ibelin, also adopted the name Ibelin due to their common maternal ancestry.
Despite modest paternal origins, during the 13th to 15th centuries, the Ibelins were among the most influential families in the Kingdom of Cyprus, intermarrying with younger sons, grandsons and brothers of kings (both kings and heirs tend to find wives real). As some of these princes, who in principle should not inherit, unexpectedly became kings, some of the Ibelin are queens. The Ibelins lived, thanks to these marriages, among the most select nobility of Cyprus, together with families such as Montfort, Dampierre, Brunswick, Lusignan, Montbeliard and Gibelet. They also intermarried with other branches of Ibelin. They also had high ancestors: Maria Komnena belonged to the Byzantine imperial dynasty of the Komnenos and was a descendant of the kings of Georgia, Bulgaria, ancient Armenia, Parthia, Persia and Syria.
When the Kingdom of Cyprus was destroyed in the 15th century century, the Ibelin apparently lost both their land and position as well social (and the family possibly died out), or at least, the sources no longer talk about them. Descendants of the Ibelin, through the royal family of Cyprus, are several royal families of modern Europe. For example, Anne, Duchess of Savoy, daughter of Janus of Cyprus, is the ancestor of the Dukes of Savoy, of the La Tremoille family, princes of Talmont and Taranto, of the Longueville family, of the princes of Monaco, of the sovereigns of Bavaria, of the House of Farnese of Parma, of the last Valois kings of France, of the dukes of Lorraine, of the Habsburg-Lorraine, of the Bourbons of France and Navarre and, together with their progeny, of practically all royalty Catholic of the last centuries.
