Hynniewtrep, an ethnic group from Meghalaya in India, consisting of the Khasi, Jaintia (or Pnars), Bhoi and War peoples.

Political representation

The Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) was formed in 1992 as a splinter of the Hynniewtrep Achik Liberation Council (HALC), the first nationalist organization in Meghalaya. The HNLC was banned on November 16, 2000 and operates clandestinely, with armed actions. They call for the creation of a Hynniewtrep state, separate from the Garo or Achik. The Chairman is Julius K Dorphang and Cheristerfield Thangkhiew is the General Secretary. The military commander is Bobby Marwein. It operates in the Khasi Mountains. It is allied to the National Socialist Council of Nagalim – Issak Muivah (NSCN-IM). Its political arm is the Hynniewtrep State Democratic Front (HSDF)
