House of the Americas Award
The Casa de las Américas Prize has been awarded annually by the Casa de las Américas in Havana (Cuba) since 1960. Originally called the Hispano-American Literary Contest (1960), it became the Latin American Literary Contest in 1964, and finally, in 1965, it acquired its current name.
Since 1960, the main award categories are poetry, short stories, novels, theater and essays. Subsequently, testimony (1970), literature for children and young people (1975), English-language Caribbean literature (1975), French-speaking Caribbean literature (1979), Brazilian literature (1980) and indigenous literature (1994) were added. Prizes in all categories are not necessarily awarded every year, and sometimes they are deserted.
Additionally, since the year 2000 three honorary awards have been given:
- José María Arguedas Narrativa Award
