HMS Delhi (D47) was a Danae-class light cruiser that served with the British Royal Navy in the Baltic and in World War II. She was ordered in 1917, finished in 1919 and scrapped in 1948 after having served in the Atlantic and Mediterranean wars.

History

Delhi served as the lead ship in the 1st LCS of the Atlantic Fleet in 1919, performing the same role in Admiral Cowan's squadron during the Baltic conflict of 1919. She also participated in the Imperial Cruisers detachment in the Mediterranean, mission that he fulfilled from November 18, 1924 to 1926, when he joined the 1st cruiser squadron at the Chinese naval station until the end of 1928. He continued as the lead ship in the 8th cruiser squadron at the American naval stations from 1929 to 1932, when he rejoined the 3rd Cruiser Squadron in the Mediterranean. She returned to her homeland in March 1938 where she went to the reservation. Reinstated into the 12th Cruiser Squadron at the start of World War II, she served with the National Fleet on patrol in the North Seas, intercepting blockade-breaking ships & # 34; Rheingold & # 34; and "Mecklenburg" before the end of the year (1939).

In 1940, he joined Force H in Gibraltar, taking part in Operation "Hurry" in July when British Army planes attacked Sardinia. He joined C's command in the South Atlantic with operations against the French-occupied army in West Africa, including the Congo, Dakar and conducting blockades off the coast of Gabon in November.

In 1941 she was converted into an anti-aircraft cruiser and taken to New York. She ended her service with the British fleet in March 1942, when she rejoined the fleet. In November she participated in the landings in North Africa, but was badly damaged by a bomb in November 1942, putting her out of action.

After the repairs, he returned to service in the Mediterranean, in search of land to land in Sicily in July 1943. In Salerno, in September, he collided with HMS Uganda, in January '44, he was at Anzio. In April '44 she was protecting convoys in the western Mediterranean. In August she participated in the landing in the south of France in the operation "Dragoon", after which she was sent to the Adriatic, where on February 12, 1945 she was damaged by an engine explosion. She was later used as a target for training until being dismantled in January 1948, being scrapped in October of that same year.
