Henry Eeles Dresser
Henry Eeles Dresser (b. May 9, 1838 - d. November 28, 1915) was an English businessman and ornithologist.
Biography
Dresser was born in Thirsk, the son of a timber merchant. He studied at schools in Bromley and Ahrensburg, and in 1854 he was sent to Gefle and Uppsala to learn Swedish.
Dresser collected bird skins and eggs throughout his life, and his business trips through Europe allowed him to increase his collection. In 1863 he traveled to Texas with lumber for the Confederate government. He spent 13 months collecting specimens in South Texas, publishing his results in The Ibis.
Dresser wrote several books, the best known being A History of the Birds of Europe (1871-1881). He also wrote The Eggs of the Birds of Europe (1910), and monographs on Bee-eaters (1884-86) and Carracas (1893).
Dresser joined the British Ornithologists' Union in 1865 and served as secretary from 1882 to 1888. He was also a member of the Linnean and Zoological Societies of London as well as an honorary member of the American Ornithologists' Society. Union.
Dresser died in Monte Carlo. He left his collection to the University of Manchester museum.
