Help:How to start a page
General principles
__- Before creating a new page, Search if someone has previously written a similar content page. If the subject does not exist yet, choose the title carefully.
- Review the project conventions, for example:
- the conventions of titles;
- if the text deserves a separate article; it may be better to add the text to a related page (especially if the text is not very long); that page can always be separated later, after it has grown.
- the style of writing, content and format.
- While you create the page and before to record, check the link What links here in the creation of the page. It incorporates new content with existing links, or changes the new title, or fixes the other links.
- If nothing links here, the page is isolated. Links to this should be added in others.
Use the assistant
__If you want to create an article but have never done it before, it is highly recommended that you use the Wikipedia wizard. The wizard will guide you step by step through the creation of the article and will help you understand what content is acceptable and what is subject to deletion. The wizard also provides templates and writing aids for articles.
You can use an article similar to the one you want to create to define the sections. You can also use a template article, which serves as a template for specific topics.
How to find articles to create
__From a red link
If you already have experience creating articles and are familiar with the wizard, there are other methods to create them, for example, you can click the red link to that page. This takes you to the edit mode of the new page, which allows you to edit the page.
Another way to start a new page, in the Spanish Wikipedia, is to do a search with the new title with the «Go» button. When the search does not find the item, please click the red link.
Links to non-existent pages are common. They are typically created to prepare for the creation of a new page and to encourage other people to create them. Links are not only handy for navigation, but also make people aware of the new page (those who read a related page and also those who follow the related page).
From a URL
If you already have experience in creating articles and are familiar with the wizard, there are other methods to create them, for example, you can use the browser's address bar to enter the URL of a new page. Even easier is to edit the name part of an existing page's URL. Using the URL for the new page displays the "non-existent article" message. The page has several create article links, which can be used to start adding content.
How to find an article with different searches
__Don't create multiple articles with identical text and different titles. If you consider it likely that readers will access an article from different search terms (for example, the article Miguel de Cervantes is also accessed directly by searching for the term Cervantes), you can use redirects. To create a redirect to an existing article, simply create a new article with the following code:
#REDIRECTION [[Destination item name]]
If you are a self-confirmed user (registered for more than 4 days and with a minimum of 50 edits) you can also move an article to a new title with the "move" which you will find at the top of the article (between "history" and "watch"). After the move, the original article becomes a simple redirect to the new title.
Create an article
__When you create a new article, you should remember that:
- The title you choose is important, because it will remain the title of the article.
- Undoing mistakes is rarely easier than avoiding them, so it's always a good idea to do homework in advance (See General Principles).
- Remember what Wikipedia is and what Wikipedia is not.
- If you just want to experience, use the Test Zone first.
