Help:How to edit a page

ImprimirCitar
Here is how to edit step by step. For a more basic description see Help:Edition and for another more concise and technical, Help:Quick reference.

Wikipedia is a wiki. This means that anyone can easily edit any page (except protected ones) and their changes will be visible immediately. Here you will learn how to edit a page. The indications given are useful for any type of page, although mainly articles are edited.

Some things about the syntax are explained: how to create links, the main text formats, structure the content in sections, how to insert images, make lists and tables, add references, templates, categories and interwikis, and some more advanced things such as formulas or time lines.

In addition, some editing peculiarities are detailed for other types of pages other than articles. Finally, there is a series of advice and recommendations to follow.

Remember to test in the testing area. Afterwards, you can search for one of the many tasks to do and be brave by editing pages. By making your first edit you become a Wikipedian!

First steps

__

To edit Wikipedia it is not necessary to be registered, although it is true that registering carries a series of advantages. Whether you decide to register or not, the process of editing an article can be summarized in three steps.

Step 1. Edit Wikipedia is very simple, just click on the tabedit» located at the top of all pages (each section also has an equivalent link).
Step 2. You will know that you are in themode editing» because you will see a white box containing the text of the article. At the top of it you have a Toolbar to format the text. Change what you deem appropriate.
Step 3. The changes you make will be visible from the moment you press the button "Save the page». Given this immediacy, it is preferable to use the button "Show preview» and once you have checked that everything is correct, then record the changes.

How to start a page

There is a page with a detailed explanation on how to start a page. Basically there are two ways:

  1. While editing the text of an existing page you can put something between double brackets like, for example, mi página. When you save the page, a blue link will appear if the page already exists, or red if not. In the second case, click on it and go to a new page you can edit. Replace the text "Write here the content of the page" with the text you want.
  2. Type the title of your new page preceded by the string https://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/ in the “URL” field of your browser and press the Enter key. If it's all right, you'll get to a page with the title you used and you can start editing it.

The recommended mode is the first one. This is recommended so that the pages do not remain loose, but that there is a link between them and it is easier for the user to find them. When naming pages it is recommended to follow title conventions.

Links

__

On the Internet you navigate between pages through links. Wikipedia follows the same system. There are mainly two types of links: internal and external.

Internal links

If you don't want to enter the double brackets ( ) by hand, you can create the links using the wizard. Select the word to link with the mouse and press the button Enlace from the toolbar. This will open a form where you will indicate the destination article title and the link title.

Internal links are those that lead to other Wikipedia pages. Internal links are created whenever the destination article provides valuable information to the current article, allowing the reader to navigate between the two.

For example, if we are writing about the planets of the solar system:

[...] los planetas del sistema solar son: Mercurio, Venus, Tierra...

Maybe we'd like to activate the internal links to the articles on each planet. In that case, we will put double brackets around each word that we want to convert into a link, taking into account the exact grammar of the title of the article to which we want to refer:

[...] los planetas del sistema solar son: Mercurio, Venus, Tierra...

The words will automatically act as internal links. If the article exists, the words will appear in blue; if the article does not exist or the title is written with a different accent or capitalization, the words will appear in red. In this case there are two linked articles:

[...] los planetas del sistema solar son: Mercurio, Venus, Tierra...

But there's a problem. Mercury is a planet, but also a chemical element. Venus is a planet, but also a goddess of mythology, etc. Therefore, Mercury and Venus are disambiguation pages and contain a list of links to all possible meanings of those terms. It will suffice to consult those pages to know the exact title of the articles on the planet Mercury and Venus, in this case: Mercury (planet) and Venus (planet). Then we'll create the links like this (with a vertical bar "|" between the article title and the link title):

[...] los planetas del sistema solar son: Mercurio, Venus, Tierra...

And now we will have the links pointing to the correct articles.

[...] los planetas del sistema solar son: Mercurio, Venus, Tierra...

Generally, the articles that share the same title are not frequent, so it will be enough to enter the brackets and that's it (this is the case of the solar system and Earth).

[...] los planetas del sistema solar son: Mercurio, Venus, Tierra...

And you will get:

[...] los planetas del sistema solar son: Mercurio, Venus, Tierra...

Add the internal connections that you think are necessary, but avoid abusing the links: use only the ones that are really necessary and do not link the same word more than once in the same section of the article.

Links to subpages

Internal links beginning with a slash (/) are interpreted as directing to a subpage. So /Example will give the same result as /Example. If you want it to be interpreted literally, you must add a colon at the beginning of it, like this: :/Example. The colon is not visible in the link, which allows its natural integration into the text. Another alternative is to use the HTML entity corresponding to the slash character (/). For example, /Example will be interpreted literally.

You can also create a local link through a global user (Meta) page using the slash in links, like this:

[[/Taller]
Which will form a link depending on the wiki in which you visualize it.
If you are in Wikipedia, the link will be - voluntary //es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Usario:nombreusuario/Taller
If you are on Wikilibros, the link will be - voluntary //en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Usario:nombreusuario/Taller

However, if the "Workshop" is not created properly in Meta, the link will show up in red regardless of whether it is created in the wiki from which you view it. So it is recommended to use a custom color for this kind of links.

Technical limitations

Links that start with two slashes are broken and do not link to any site. Thus, links like // or //Example simply won't do. The solution is the same as for links to subpages, with the drawback that they are always interpreted literally. However, although it is not recommended, it is possible to create subpages that include a double bar, but to link them it is necessary to write their full name.

If the page name should start the same as a namespace, then it could not be distinguished as belonging to the main space and would fall within the restrictions on titles. That way, a link like Help: save us! will always lead, even if you add a colon or use HTML entities, to the Help space and not an article.

Some words are interpreted as a key, called a prefix, which transforms the internal link into an external one. Prefixes can be full words or apocopes, always followed by a colon. This limitation is the most restrictive, since it is absolutely not possible to link to pages that begin in the same way as a prefix, no matter how many colons are added or if HTML entities are used. The reason is that MediaWiki considers them as an interlanguage link while if the initial colon is added they are interpreted as external links.

For example en: links the page in which it is included to the front page of the English Wikipedia, while :en: and :en: are external links that redirects to that same page.

In Special:Interlanguage links you have a complete list of available prefixes.

IMPORTANT: Remember that neither the searcher nor Special:PagesPorPrefix find pages whose name starts in the same way as a prefix, since the software does not even allow the creation of the page. See Wikipedia:Technical restrictions on titles.

External links

There is also an assistant to create external links. Press the button Enlace from the toolbar and select the option “A an external website”. Write in « Page Title» the website or URL of the chosen site (do not forget to add at first http://) and in "Table of the link" the text that will link.

Many times it is necessary to link to other websites on the Internet. For this reason, these types of links are called external links.

Note that in articles, external links are placed in the "References" and "External Links". In the body of the article, only place links within the Spanish Wikipedia.

The system automatically detects external links starting with http://. For example, when entering the following (without the need for double brackets or a vertical bar):

http://www.google.com

We will directly obtain an external link:

http://www.google.com

If we want the web address to be hidden under a text that we choose, we will proceed as follows:

Página principal de Google

And it will result:

Página principal de Google

It is also possible to create an external link so that it appears as a numbered reference, simply enclosing it in single brackets ([ ]):

We will obtain:

[1]

Other links

There are these other variants to internal and external links.

  • Titles with parenthesis: Júpiter (mitología)Júpiter
  • Plurales:
    • reyesreyes
    • reyes de Portugalreyes de Portugal
  • Images and categories: precede them from two points (:).
    • :Categoría:PaísesCategoría:Países
    • ver todos los países del mundover todos los países del mundo
    • :Archivo:Einstein.jpgArchivo:Einstein.jpg
    • una imagen de Albert Einstein pensativouna imagen de Albert Einstein pensativo
  • Titles in a different name space from the main: Wikipedia:CaféCafé
  • Subpages: establish a hierarchy. They are useful in user pages and discussion (to store old conversations).
    • /Subpágina: link to a subpage of the current one. I mean, another way of linking to Wikipedia:Café/Archivo from "Wikipedia:Café" is to do so: Archivo.
    • ../: link to the top page of the current one.
    • ../Hermana: link to a page at the same hierarchy level. I mean, from Wikipedia:Café/Archivo We can link to 2004 a 2004.
  • Sections: allows linking with sections within the same page.
    • #Historia: if the article has a section called "History", the link will take us to it.
    • #top: sends at the beginning of the page.
    • #footer: sends at the end of the page.
    • As with other internal links, we can modify the link text: su historiasu historia

Text formatting

__

The text formats make it easier to read and highlight the most important points. The main ones are bold and italics. There are also other additional options.

Text formatting, especially underlining, strikethrough, horizontal lines, different sizes, fonts, and colors, can have a negative effect on the readability of the text. For this reason, keep in mind that you should not abuse text formats, and try to use them as little as possible. Look at other articles to understand when to use bold and italics.

Bold

To turn a word or phrase into bold You must surround him. Three simple quotes (), writing them by hand or pressing the button Negrita from the toolbar. The following code:

...el texto en negritas resalta mucho sobre todo lo demás...

Generate this:

...el texto en negritas resalta mucho sobre todo lo demás...

Italics

To turn a word or phrase into italics You must surround him. Two simple quotes (), writing them by hand or pressing the button Negritas from the toolbar. The following code:

...el texto en cursiva resalta un poco menos que en negrita...

Generate this:

...el texto en cursiva resalta un poco menos que en negrita...

Other formatting options

In addition to bold and italics, there are other text formats:

Underlined

...we can underline <u>a part</u> of the sentence... →...we can underline a part of the sentence...

Strikethrough

...even strikethrough <s>a fragment</s> from another... →...even cross out a fragment from another...

Indentation

The simplest way to indent text is to write a "colon" (:) at the start of the line. The more colons you put, the more indentation the line will have.

When there is a lot of indentation, the I remove indentation template is used and so it starts from the beginning of the sentence, and between the new and the old sentence there is a line like the following. You have to put number of points, in number of points replace it with the same number of points as the last sentence, you can also put an integer number. Remaining like this ::: or 3
┌──────┘

Monospace font

To type text in a fixed-width font, such as "Courier", type one or more spaces at the beginning of the line:

In other words, if you start a paragraph with spaces, that line will be indented
and at the same time it will appear with a monospaced source.

Syntax Coloring

If you want to insert snippets of source code you can make it easier to read by using syntax coloring:

cedesyntaxhighlight lang="C"
int main()
{
printf("hola");
!
Δ/syntaxhighlight

It will look like this:

int main(){ printf("Hello");!

Fonts

There are tags to change the font type, so it stands out from the normal text.

  • : monospace source. Example: monoespaciomonospace
  • : highlights the text slightly by a gray background color. Example: mi códigomi código.
  • : similar to but preserve the line jumps.
  • : to write in a font you want. Example to write using Times New Roman: Aquí el contenidoAquí el contenido.
  • : its utility is to be able to insert wiki code without being interpreted. The following example does not activate the link: enlaceenlace. A comfortable way to use select the code you want to display and press the button Sin formato wiki.

Horizontal lines

You can make a horizontal line by putting four hyphens in a row ----. You will get this:

Quotes and captions

It will suffice to make use of the template designed for this purpose: Citation. Its syntax is Text to cite.. For example:

Imagine a world in which every person on the planet has free access to the total sum of human knowledge. That's what we're doing.
Jimmy Wales, Interview in Slashdot

Special characters

You may need to use special characters like: ü À α. To quickly access a list of the most common ones, click on the “Special Characters” section of the toolbar. In Help:Special characters you can check the ones that are available and some additional indications.

Superscripts and Subscripts

With the labels and respectively, inserting the text into them. Example: texto arribatext above and texto abajotext below. Remember that you have the buttons at your disposal Subíndice Superíndice (subscript/superscript).

Text size

You can modify it by putting the text between the <span style="font-size:"></span> tags. A percentage less than 100% will reduce it and a greater one will increase it.

For example: <span style="font-size:85%">small text</span>small text and <span style="font-size:115%">large text</span>large text

You can also use the buttons Texto grande Texto pequeño (enlarge/reduce text size), to do so without further complications.

Colour

You can also control the colo r. For example: <span style="color: #FF00FF">this text is pink</span>this text it's pink. For a list of colors you can use, see HTML Colors.

Comments

It is possible to place comments in the edition. In edition mode when inserting commented lines, these will only be seen when editing and will not appear in the article. Comments are particularly useful when translating a wiki from one language to another, or when you're not sure you're doing the proper translation of a piece of text.

For example <!--my comment-->

Sections

__

When a page has a lot of text and the paragraphing is not enough, sections are created to structure the text. For example, the article History of France has a section for each era. In turn, each section can have subsections.

The section title is placed between two or more equal signs == Section ==. The spaces between the equal signs and the title are not taken into account. It is the same to put ==Filmography== as == Filmography ==. Although it is mandatory to paste the first equals sign to the left margin.

The number of equal signs defines the hierarchy level of the section as follows:

Sección 1
Sección 1.1
Sección 1.1.1
Sección 1.1.2
Sección 1.2
Sección 2
Sección 3
You can also create sections using the toolbar by clicking the "Header" dropdown menu.

Barra de herramientas

Next to sections is a [edit] link, which allows you to edit just that section. This makes it easy to edit long articles.

In the event that, because the page has a special design, it is not convenient for these links to appear, you can eliminate them by putting __NOEDITSECTION__.

Archives

__

In Spanish Wikipedia, only the files available in the Wikimedia Commons multimedia repository can be used. Therefore, if you want to insert an image or resource into an article, you must first upload it to Wikimedia Commons (go to the upload form).

Remember that only files with free licenses are allowed (such as Creative Commons in its CC-BY and CC-BY-SA variants, Free Art License or public domain).

Most of the images and resources of other Internet websites are not free (if they indicate nothing, they are considered "All rights reserved"), so they do not serve Wikipedia (and if the subs will be deleted).

The images, audio and video created by you serve, provided you decide to publish them with one of the free licenses mentioned above.

Once you've uploaded the file to Wikimedia Commons, you need to insert a code into the Wikipedia article to make it display. This code is made up of two fundamental parts: the file name and the display options.

opciones

You can do it with the button Archivo empotrado which appears in the toolbar. Write and select the name of the file and the alternative text — separated by a "VA" bar — and press the button. Write Archivo: ahead and behind.

The filename should always have an extension (most images are JPG/JPEG, PNG or SVG; for audio or video you can use OGG and for documents PDF or DjVu). You must be careful with upper and lower case. For example, if you upload an image with the name “My Image.jpg” (note the capital “i”) but then don't spell its name exactly the same, it won't work. and said image will not be seen (a red link will appear indicating that the image does not exist). However, it doesn't matter if you type spaces or underscores “_”, the names “My Image.jpg” and “My_Image.jpg” are equivalents.

Some of the advanced display options when inserting files are as follows:

  • Format: miniatura or thumb (minimum and boxing) frame (marco) or border (with a gray edge). It is advisable to use miniatura.
  • Alignment: file position on the screen (it can be indicated in English or Spanish). It may be: left or izquierda, center or centro, right or derecha. The common thing is on the right.
  • Size: indicated in pixels wide. For example 200px or 300px. If there is no need to use it larger, the best is less or equal to 220px. Remember that there are still people with small screen resolutions. You can also specify the size of the high image by placing the letter x before the value in pixels, such as x220px. Note that it is not possible to specify both; in such cases the width is given priority.
  • Description: is the text that explains the contents of the file (in the case of the images is the photo foot). It can be as detailed as you want.
  • Alternative text: indicated by code alt=. There you can add a narrative text of what you see. It is advisable to always put it, thus, the blind people who use screen readers can get an idea of what is shown in the file.
  • Link: indicated by code link=. Add the name of a Wikipedia page or a web address there, will make the image take to that page by clicking on it, instead of the default description page.

A file can be passed no, one, several or all options (and in any order, the only requirement is to put the file name at the beginning and separate the options with vertical bars "|").

Images

This image of the Great Wall China has been inserted by the code:
miniaturadeimagen|derecha|300px|...
He has CC-BY-2.0 (Creative Commons Attribution 2.0). You can see more information about the image by clicking on it.

Here are some examples for inserting images in articles:

  • Archivo:Mi imagen.jpg: we have not indicated anything. It will be at maximum size and floating to the left.
  • thumb: it will come out with a box around. By default, due to thumb, the position will be on the right and with 180 pixels in size (unless the reader has changed it in his preferences).
  • border|100px: with a grey edge around and 100 pixels.
  • thumb|left: with box and left. The size will be 180 pixels (indicated by the thumb by default).
  • thumb|right|350px: with box, right and 350 pixels.
  • thumb|right|200px|La descripción de mi imagen.: with box, right, 200 pixels and with a useful description.

It is best to use . Due to the thumb it will be displayed with a box, to the right and at 180px. If the reader has chosen other values in his preferences, it will be displayed with them, so we are leaving him that freedom of choice (which is good).

Audio and video

Wikipedia uses only the open formats Ogg and WebM for multimedia resources. Therefore, the sound and video files you find will use the free Vorbis, Theora and WebM codecs, which are similar in their operation to better known formats such as MP3 and MPEG-2/4. These formats (as in the case of MP3) are protected by patents and copyrights, so they are not allowed here.

The easiest way to add a media resource (especially audio) is by using the Multimedia template; click on its link to see a detailed description of how to use it. Their most common parameters are summarized below:

Acorde
You remember being played in a accordion.

Problems when playing this file?

Example (see output on the right):

There are many other audio templates, mainly used to demonstrate the pronunciation of foreign language terms, such as the audio/audio-IPA. In addition, the Wikipedia Recorded template allows you to insert spoken fragments into articles, after reading and recording (see Wikiproject:Wikipedia Recorded to learn more). When adding a sound file to an article, avoid using templates or code that link to the sound file directly, as this will hide the license information that allows readers to see who created the file, its source, and the license under the one that was published.

Television clip showing Buzz Aldrin descending from a staircase and stepping on lunar terrain.

For video clips, in addition to using the multimedia template, you can use the same tag than with images. The result is shown on the right.

thumb|200px|Clip de televisión que muestra a Buzz Aldrin descendiendo de una escalera y pisando terreno lunar.

By default, a frame from the middle of the video will be displayed. To use a different one, use the thumbtime parameter. For example:

thumbtime=3|thumb|200px|Bombarderos de la Primera Guerra Mundial. Fotograma a los 3 segundos.

Specify the time in seconds, or use a colon ":" to separate hours, minutes, and seconds "HH:MM:SS".

World War I Bombers. Chart in half (due to no indication thumbtime). It happens that at that time the screen is blank, so it doesn't look good.
World War I Bombers. Photo by 3 seconds (electing thumbtime=3).

To give a link to the video (without allowing it to be displayed in the article), insert a colon before the file call:

el vídeoel vídeo

Musical notation

Snippets of music notation and MIDI audio sequences can also be inserted into Wikipedia using the <score></score> tags using MediaWiki's embedded software LilyPond (Score Extension).

For example, the following code snippet...

≤3⁄2⁄2⁄2⁄2⁄2⁄2⁄2⁄2⁄2⁄2⁄2⁄2⁄2⁄2⁄2⁄2⁄2⁄2⁄2⁄2⁄2⁄2⁄2⁄2⁄2⁄2⁄2⁄2⁄2⁄2⁄2⁄2⁄2⁄2⁄2⁄2⁄2⁄2⁄2⁄2⁄2⁄2⁄2⁄2⁄2⁄2⁄2⁄2⁄2⁄2⁄2⁄2⁄2⁄2⁄2⁄2⁄2⁄2⁄2⁄2⁄2⁄2⁄2⁄2⁄2⁄2⁄2⁄2⁄2⁄2⁄2⁄2⁄2⁄2⁄2⁄2⁄2⁄2⁄2⁄2⁄2

...becomes the following musical notation.

relative c' { f d f a d f e d cis a cis e a g f e }

The example above is a simplified version of Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach's Solfeggietto in C minor.

If you want to generate an audio file that matches the example, just add the |vorbis=1 parameter after the opening <score> tag. and it will be done automatically:

≥score vorbis="1" HCFCrelative c' { f a d f e d cis a cis e a g f e }{
relative c' { f d f a d f e d cis a cis e a g f e }

In addition to short examples, it is possible to insert more complex musical notation or sheet music (including voice lyrics) using LilyPond codes. You can visit this link for more information on the current LilyPond notation.

PDF and DJVu

Fichero DjVu with the novel A translation of the Quixote of Florencio Moreno Godino.

It is also possible to add PDF and DjVu files to articles. The same method is followed as for the images.

The file on the right, although it looks like an image, is not. If you click on it, you will go to a page where you can browse the entire document. It has been inserted with the code:

[[Archivo:Una traducción del Quijote (1).djvu|thumb|right|Fichero DjVu con la novela Una traducción del Quijote de Florencio Moreno Godino.]]

This type of files supports a special option called "page" that allows you to choose which page of the document will be displayed. If instead of page 1 as shown by default, we are interested in showing page 4, we would do the following:

[[Archivo:Una traducción del Quijote (1).djvu|thumb|right|page=4|Fichero DjVu con la novela Una traducción del Quijote de Florencio Moreno Godino.]]

Most of the time you add a file of this type, its letters will not be large enough to be readable. It doesn't matter. The purpose is to show that this document exists so that the user clicks and loads it on another page.

The procedure for PDF files is analogous.

Lists

__

Lists allow you to visually organize information.

Numbered

The numbered lists are created using the symbol # stuck on the left side. To add one easily, use the button Lista numerada located in the "Advanced" section of the toolbar.

Numbered lists are used when you need to indicate the position of each element, for example when describing a sequence of steps.

This is an example of a numbered list:

# item one
# item two
## They can be nested by putting two or more # in a row
## Other
### Even more...
# item three

Which generates the following:

  1. Item one
  2. Item two
    1. Can nest by putting two or more # followed
    2. Another
      1. Still more...
  3. Item three

Not numbered

The unnumbered lists (or vineyards) are created with the sign of asterisk *. If you don't want to write them by hand, use the button Lista viñeteada from the toolbar.

Unnumbered lists are the most common, and are used when the order of points is not relevant.

With the following code for unnumbered lists:

* One point
* Other point
** We can also have sublists (using several * in a row)
*** And on, and on...
* Last Point

We will have this:

  • A point
  • Another point
    • We can also have sublists (using several * followed)
      • And go on, and go on...
  • Last point

Other lists

The definition lists are generated starting the line with the semicolon ;. The rest of the elements of the list are generated by putting the colon : either on the same line of the title of the list (if it is only one element) or on a new line. If you need to include the colon as punctuation within the title of the list, you will need to replace it with its HTML encoding (:).

Definition lists are rarely used in articles. Instead, they are used to make comments on talk pages.

If we enter this code:

; This is the title of the definition list: This is an element.
: This is another element.
:: one more.
: and this one.

We will see this output:

This is the title of the definition list
This is an element.
This is another element.
One more.
And this one.

Tables

__

It is possible to create tables in two ways, with Wikipedia's own syntax (recommended way) or through HTML code (<table></table>). If you find any table in HTML form, you can use this automatic converter to convert it to wiki format.

To insert a custom table easily, click the button Tablawhich is under the "Advanced" section of the toolbar.

Heading 1Heading 2Heading 3
cell 1cell 2cell 3
cell 4cell 5cell 6

The table on the right has been generated with the following code:

{IVA border="1" style="float:right; marginal:0 0 1em 1em"
! Header 1 !! Header 2 !! Heading 3
UD-
cells 1 日本語 cells 2 Русский
UD-
cells 4 日本語
.
Heading 1Heading 2Heading 3
cell 1cell 2cell 3
cell 4cell 5cell 6

As you may have noticed, the design is not very stylized. That is why there are "classes" that define default styles. This is the case of the “wikitable” class, which is inserted with the tag class="wikitable".

{IVA class="wikitable" align=right
! Header 1 !! Header 2 !! Heading 3
UD-
cells 1 日本語 cells 2 Русский
UD-
LIC cells 4 UBLICITYS cells 5 UBLICANCES 6
.

Index

On this very page there is an index at the beginning, but if you try to edit it, you'll see that you can't. Why? Indexes are automatically generated when there are more than three sections on the page. The sections are numbered according to the hierarchy. The number 1 is given to the first section there is, regardless of its level, and it will be considered the root of the hierarchical tree. That is why this page, although it starts at level 2, the title appears in the index as 1 and not as 1.1.

For more precise control of the indexes, there are a series of commands that you can put in the text of the article. It is recommended to use them only when the index can create a problem (for example, in article lists or special layouts):

  • __FORCETOC__ makes the index appear, even if there are not enough sections. You must put it at the beginning or at the end of the article.
  • __TOC__ makes the index appear on the part of the page where you put it.
  • __NOTOC__ makes the index not appear, by many sections that have the article. Put it at the beginning or end of the article.

Formula

__

In some articles, for example those about mathematics, it is necessary to include more or less complex formulas. TeX is used for this. For example, with the code <math>x=frac{-bpmsqrt{b^2-4ac}}{2a}</math>, you get:

x=− − b± ± b2− − 4ac2a{displaystyle x={frac {-bpm {sqrt {b^{2}-4ac}}}}{2a}}}}{2a}}}

Timelines

You can create timelines like this, although its use is not widely used by Wikipedia:

Sign a comment

In many Wikipedia sites, such as the discussion pages, the Café, and the library boards as the list of vandalized, when you write a message or comment, you are asked to sign it. To do this you don't have to do it by hand, but by putting four gulls ~~~~~~. This symbol corresponds to ASCII 126 and you can consult here as writing them on your keyboard. Due to the frequent use of the signature process, Wikipedia allows you to sign, more easily, by pressing the button Firma y fecha you will find in the taskbar when editing text. In the articles, however, it is not expected that there are signatures and, in fact, there is a policy approved by most Wikipedia contributors against the signatures in articles.

Additionally, the use of indentation can greatly improve the layout of a talk page, making it easier to read. A practiced standard on Wikipedia is to indent your comments one level more than the comment of the person you are replying to. You can put it into practice by following the recommendations mentioned in the indentation section.

How to edit a redirect

If you want to redirect traffic from one page to another (some with a better title, for example), you can use the command "#REDIRECCIÓN: nombre de página"at the beginning of the page description or press the button Redirección to add it automatically; this button is under the "Advanced" section of the toolbar.

Go to potato, for example. To consult the history of the old page, click on the link "Redirected from old page" at the top of the new page.

Councils and recommendations

__

Forbidden:

  • La propaganda propaganda propaganda: this is a selfless and free work done with effort and non-profit.
  • The insultFor obvious reasons. We are many with stories, experiences, culture and different places... and different ideas.
  • La copy. Texts or images cannot be copied if they have copyrights unless these same rights authorize such copy, and their modification and redistribution in a manner consistent with the GFDL license.
  • Signature the articles. Encyclopedias in general and Wikipedia in particular are collaborative works; therefore, no one can be granted their authorship. If you must sign the comments that are written in the Café, in the ballots and in the discussion of articles and pages of other users.
  • Imagesincluding copyright notes, authorization, authorship and links from photo feet (see Wikipedia:Votations/2004/On the use of photo feet).

Avoid, within the limits dictated by logic, writing:

  • «Today»For a while is obsolete. It's better to date. Example: replace "The currency is currently the euro" with "since 1999 the currency is the euro".
  • «Now»: Maybe tomorrow is no longer.
  • Comparisons: better Mediterranean beaches" (Almost sure this is not true or the less sustainable in time).
  • Exaggerations: "We can see all the birds" (some will be missing).
  • Do not write in first person: neither of the first people, nor of the plural or of the singular, type “me”, “us”, “mi”, “our”, etc. should be used.

Modify without fear, but with justification:

  • It's better not to put anything that's a erroneous data.
  • Put a summary (next to the "Save Changes" button): You will save the librarians time, and the short description of your change will be included in the page/page history.
  • No. embroideres Nothing if you haven't checked before it was wrong.

If they are variable data in time:

  • Place the Date in which they were taken:
e.g. The population is 10 600 (2003)
  • Place the source from which they were taken:
e.g. The population is 10 600 (2003 National Statistical Institute)

It's in very bad taste:

  • Correct something written in the Café (except extreme cases) without the author's permission. Don't forget that erring is human... (the rush and the desires are made by spelling faults).
  • Don't sign when comments are made on the Café or in the discussion of articles and pages of other users: it is like throwing the stone and hiding the hand (not saying why or who).

The most appreciated virtue is patience. You will find deviant texts, with bad ideas, provocative, judgmental, insulting, vandal... to this... patience. And if you want and can, correct it following the rules of the Wikipedia Style Manual.

On Wikipedia, voting is common, especially to seek consensus. For that you must know how they work. It is considered that with 500 editions and six months old you can vote. (See Wikipedia: Voting/2015/Minimum requirements for the right to vote.)
