Hana Yori Dango (花より男子< /span> lit. Boys are better than flowers?) is a manga series written and illustrated by Yōko Kamio. It was published in Shūeisha's Margaret magazine from October 1992 to June 2008. It was awarded the 41st Shōgakukan Prize.

The title Hana Yori Dango is a pun on the Japanese proverb "花より団子" (the dango is better than the flowers), which means that basic needs such as food (the dango is a type of sweet) should be put before the sensory needs, such as seeing a pretty flower.

Overview

In 1995, the film Hana Yori Dango, starring Yuki Uchida and Shosuke Tanihara, was released in Japan. In 2001, the Taiwanese television series Meteor Garden (2001) premiered, then a special Meteor Rain (2001), followed in 2002 by the second and final season of this version Meteor Garden 2 (2002), starring Barbie Xsu and Jerry Yan. It was broadcast on GTV.

From 2005 to 2007, the series Hana Yori Dango (2005), Hana Yori Dango: Returns (2007) and the 2008 film Hana Yori Dango: The Final Act (2008) were broadcast in Japan on TBS television.), starring Mao Inoue and Jun Matsumoto. Two additional specials were broadcast to the television series.

One of the most successful franchises that launched South Korean actors Lee Min Ho and Koo Hye Sun to fame was Boys Over Flowers (2009), a television series broadcast in South Korea on KBS2. Two Boys Before Flowers specials were broadcast that same year: F4 After Story (2009) and Boys Before Flowers: F4 Talk Show Special.

In the same year, the Chinese television network Hunan TV launched a television series Let's Go Watch Meteor Shower (2009) and the second season Let's Watch The Meteor Shower Again (2010). It starred Hans Zhang and Zheng Shuang.

The Hana Yori Dango craze finally hit the US in 2013 with the Boys Before Friends (2013) version, produced by TBC and Willkinn Media and aired on Viki, though not finished. It starred Claude Racine in the first episode and Dawn Morrow in the following episodes, in the role of Domyoji was Joseph Almani.

Plot

The story centers on Makino Tsukushi, a fifteen-year-old working-class girl who is naturally a fighter, forced to face all kinds of obstacles and feelings. Makino's parents are poor, but for the sake of Makino and her education, she enters Eitoku, an elite institution where the children of the country's wealthiest families study. When she gets there she realizes that she has entered a totally different world than the one she knew, one where you are measured by how much money you have. Her desire is to go unnoticed for the two years she has left to study there, but her aspirations will be frustrated the day she faces "F4", a group of four boys who dominate the school, even submitting the teachers, since they are the four richest boys.

Characters

  • Tsukushi Makino (, excited. Makino Tsukushi): she is a pretty rebellious girl but with a very great sense of honesty. He hates the superficiality of all people out of society, so having to go to an elite school doesn't make him any grace. He likes one of the F4, Rui members, although he knows it may be an impossible love. As time passes, some of her colleagues are knowing and understanding her, while others will never understand her, only despising her economic status. Over time she falls in love with Tsukasa, but she doesn't recognize it until she's about to lose it. Tsukushi Makino, in personal relationships, is of the most timid and imposes much on her the impulsive reactions of the boys; she needs to go very slowly in consolidating a relationship. She even though at first she detested and refused the F4, eventually became her best friends and understood each one and they also took care of her, showing her at the graduation party, where everyone decides that she is the one they wanted to take and dance a dance piece with her.
  • Tsukasa Domyoji (assemble petitions) Domyoji Tsukasa): His family is the richest and most powerful in all Japan. He is brusque, somewhat violent, and irritating, and at the same time very capricious, and with somewhat masochistic tendencies, but he is like a small child, since he has always had everything in this life, but in turn, he is a good person in the background, being very kind, especially with Tsukushi, of which he is deeply in love. During history, the change and warmth of Tsukushi in Tsukasa's personality is seen. Achieving to make it ripen a bit, appreciate the things and the people he has close. He is a very handsome boy, his main physical characteristic being his curly hair, which is often the subject of Tsukushi's mockery. As time goes by, you will realize your actions and your own mistakes, making you value many things you didn't care about before. On the sleeve, after overcoming all the obstacles to finally being with Tsukushi, he finds out that his father is sick, and decides to go to America. To take care of his family's business, leaving Tsukushi (whom he proposed marriage and did not accept) waiting for him for 4 years.
  • Vic Chou is Hua Ze Lei, plays Rui's character.
Rui Hanazawa (continued) Hanazawa Rui): He is an introverted and passive boy, all contrary to his best friend Tsukasa. He hardly speaks and usually has no interest in communicating with the world; he expresses himself only by touching the violin on the fire escape or in a rose garden in the Eitoku. He's got some bad genius and he can become ironic. He says that he is not interested in the problems of others, but as he is more familiar with Tsukushi, he ends up falling in love with her, which will bring him problems with Tsukasa on several occasions. His great love, before Tsukushi, was his childhood friend Shizuka Toudou, who is a little older than him. In the sleeve, it is the containment of Tsukushi, he constantly saves her when he gets into trouble, she describes it as her oasis, the atmosphere of him captivates her and that is what at first falls in love, although he has only head for Shizuka and therefore goes after her to France when she decides to give up her last name and become a lawyer. He soon returns, with a fairly large personality change with what Tsukushi is surprised. Tsukushi and Rui try to have a relationship, but after a failed appointment and the problems that Tsukasa causes them, Rui tells Tsukushi not to love her and it all ends, making Tsukushi decide to give her a final point to her feelings for him. After this, little by little you see how the personality of him constantly changes (always laughing at paved, sleeping a lot and seeing a lot of T.V.). It comes a while, when Tsukushi goes to America. In search of Tsukasa, Rui goes after Tsukushi and that is where he confesses his feelings (in a very careless way), the way he affected him when he found out that she was in a girlfriend with Tsukasa and the way they became "only friends" and clears him that it happened with Shizuka in France and Canada. After his return to Japan, Makino clarifies that he who really wants is Tsukasa and he tells him that he doesn't care: when confessing he didn't expect a relationship since she was with his best friend, and he would settle for just seeing her smile and be next to her, so he constantly contains her on different occasions and protects her, reaching the point of hitting Tsukasa (thing that he had never done since he was a very quiet guy). In the last tom of the sleeve (No37), he seeks his role in life and in the end discovers that his role is to always take care of Tsukasa and Tsukushi.
  • Rainie Yang interprets Yuki (person) of the first Taiwanese version.
Soujirou Nishikado (engineering. Nishikado Sojiro): is known as the "Playboy" par excellence of the F4, a womanizer who opens her heart to very few people. He loves nightlife and always being surrounded by good company. The fact that Tsukasa is a virgin causes headache, so much that he makes constant jokes on the subject, as with Rui. She is in love with her childhood friend; however, she lives a loving story with Yuki, the best friend of Tsukushi. His family has been dedicated to the art of tea for generations. He and Mimasaka help in the relationship of Tsukushi and Tsukasa, they tend to several traps for them to be together, they always do imitations of them two together and some bets, when Tsukushi accepts the fiancée with Tsukasa, they get really happy as they think that with her Tsukasa will stop taking advantage of them, ultimately, it will change. He had only one love of his life and that's when he meets Yuki who opens up and tells him about this and how he lost it and when he wondered it would have happened if it had been anything else. And it is Yuki who accidentally helps him to meet with Sara, her old love and to close that open cycle they had left. And that's how he realized he lost his chance, but they were friends.
  • Akira Mimasaka (felt guilty, Mimasaka Akira): known as the second "Playboy" of the group, to the latter the Tachan of Don Juan. Soujirou's best friend is the most measured of the F4. Son of a yakuza family, he feels somewhat embarrassed by his condition. She loves older women. His role is not very relevant in history. In the sleeve, his role is not very relevant either, he only sees it with his best friend Soujirou, making his with the relationship of Tsukasa and Makino, although for this reason, he is dedicated a One-shot at the end of this "Luna Crescent" in which he is made known, and to know a little more the role he holds in the F4. As you know he stands out for being a womanizer and that these women are older or married, this is because his mother is very young (from 38 years old, capricious and constantly behaves in an old and indecent way) and also his two little sisters (gemelas) who love him so much that they do not leave him in peace and always say that they will marry him when they are great, as he is always very fond. His father has no presence in any chapter, he is only named 1 or 2 times, so it is noted that he is in charge of taking care of the 3 women in his house. With the F4, Akira plays the same role as taking care of all. Although in the sleeve this does not become very present, in the One-shot it is clearly seen as it happens from its point of view, in this the only one that realizes is Tsukushi comparing it to the situation of her and her family, here is where Akira thinks that the girl that he would need would be Makino, since she was the only one to make him feel like a full moon (since he would be like the "light" and the other F3s)
  • Shizuka Toudou (knowledge): Toudou Shizuka): She is a splendid girl who lives her life as if she was a real princess as she was the only daughter of a powerful family and possessing a great beauty because of which she works as a model. Unlike the girls of her own elite, Shizuka is an exceptional, mature and kind woman. It's Rui's great love and she becomes Tsukushi's friend throughout history. Some chapters advanced, she renounces her last name to be a lawyer and goes to work in France, something that misses everyone. Rui goes after her, but apparently this doesn't work at all so they break when they meet in Canada. After this she is no longer seen until the One-shot "Three years" where she marries a lawyer.
  • Yuki Matsuoka (▲): Matsuoka Yuuki): She's Tsukushi's intimate friend. He is a very fragile person although throughout history his character will become stronger. He likes to help Tsukushi a lot and will have a brief love story with Soujirou. He works at the Tsukushi Sweetie, he's also poor. She's a pretty girl.
  • Kazuya Aoike (PHILIPPING CHEERING) He's an old childhood friend of Tsukushi. His father gets rich with a small company and that's why he gets to meet Tsukushi. He's a pretty happy boy and he doesn't care much what they say about him. He's madly in love with Tsukushi. Their economic situation is threatened just like Yuki's, when Tsukasa's mother wants to run Tsukushi on her son's side.
  • Haruo Makino (Makino Haruo): He's Tsukushi's father. He's always unemployed. He's not a very important character but he's very funny and he cares about Tsukushi, just like the rest of the family. Their constant lack of employment causes many headaches and problems to Tsukushi as they have to move many times during history.
  • Chieko Makino (Makino Chieko): She's Tsukushi's mother. She's bent on Tsukushi marrying a rich man. She's also a pretty funny character and although sometimes her husband irritates her because she stays out of work, but she loves him a lot.
  • Susumu Makino (Makino Susumu): He's Tsukushi's brother. He's not a very little-known character in history, but he's quite interested since he loves his sister a lot and sometimes makes him stick and get angry with him.
  • Kaede Domyoji (Disclaimer) Domjoyi Kaede): She is the mother of Tsukasa. It has a very strong character and keeps your child unprotected. He doesn't want Tsukasa and Tsukushi together. He has a chain of hotels in his name. She looks like a mature frivolous woman, but deep down she loves her two children a lot.
  • Tsubaki Domyoji (Disclaimer): Domyoji Tsubaki): She's Tsukasa's older sister. It's the one that raised Tsukasa. She's a strong woman like her mother. She's married and lives in Los Angeles, although when her husband travels, she goes to Japan. She loves the relationship of Tsukasa and Tsukushi, and she always supports them, feels identified with her story, as she also fell in love with a person who was not in her own social status.
  • Tama (laughing, Tama-senpai): She's the head of the maids at the Domyoji house. He's been with Tsukasa since he was very young. She's been working in that house since she was very young. She's a very loud screaming woman. She trains Tsukushi for a while when she tries to pay in some way Tsubaki's hospitality by letting her stay in her house. Tama manages to engage with Tsukushi as well as the other employees and help against Tsukasa's mother on several occasions. In the end when Tsukasa is going to leave, Tama tells her how she will live there until she dies, she will visit her from time to time.
  • Sakurako Sanjou (PHONE RINGS):):):):):):):):):):):): Sanjou Sakurako): She's a supposed friend of Tsukushi. I was in love with Tsukasa since very small. It was very ugly before, but an operation was done on the face. He returned to school with the intention of avenging the F4 even though he did not get it at all.
  • Shigeru Okahawara (oil Ok Okahawara Shigeru): She's Tsukasa's ex-promised and Tsukushi's intimate friend. She's a happy and kind girl. She's lovely, weird and childish. At first he presented a threat to Tsukushi as he had a relationship with Tsukasa similar to that of Tsukushi with him, but Domyoji did not doubt who he really wanted and ended up leaving and letting them continue with his relationship, making himself a good friend of both.
  • Amon Kunisawa (Kunisawa Amon)
  • Junpei Oribe (部γ): Oribe Junpei): is a Kohai of Tsukushi and saves her from being intimidated after she returns from her trip from Canada. It appears for the first time when he was a nerd child, with glasses and an indifferent attitude. He is actually a famous model for a well-known magazine, hiding his identity in school through his glasses.
  • Thomas A handsome boy from Germany who reminds Tsukushi of Rui Hanazawa.
  • Asai Yuriko (): margin ▪  ):の):。 She's a student at Eitoku University. She and her best friends, Minako Yamano and Erika Ayuhara, are part of the group known as the lilies. Minako and his friends intimidate Tsukushi Makino in high school.

Hana Yori Dango (Movie)

Based on the Japanese shojo manga series “Hana Yori Dango” by Yoko Kamio. The original Japanese title “Hana Yori Dango” or “Boys Over Flowers”, refers to a common Japanese proverb is Hana Yori Dango ('花より団子?, literally 'dumplings instead of flowers'), which alludes to the preference for practical things instead of aesthetics with reference to the people who attend the Hanami (flower festival), but instead of enjoying the flowers, they focus more on the materialistic side of the event like getting food and buying souvenirs. In 1995 it was the first story of the series by Toei Company. It was released on VHS in 1997 and on DVD in 2001.
