Gynerium is a genus of herbaceous plants in the Poaceae family (the only genus in the Gynerieae tribe). It is native to Mexico and subtropical America.

Etymology

The generic name derives from the Greek words gune (female) and erion (wool), referring to the pistillate spikelets. In Bolivia it is also known as "chuchío".

Cytology

Base number of the chromosome, 2n = 72 and 76.
