Guillermo Ortiz Martinez
Guillermo Ortiz Martínez (Mexico City, Federal District, July 21, 1948) is a Mexican economist, professor, and politician. He was governor of the Bank of Mexico. He was Secretary of the Treasury of the Government of Ernesto Zedillo, as well as Secretary of Communications and Transportation.
He has a degree in Economics from the National Autonomous University of Mexico, with a Master's and PhD in Economics from Stanford University. He has held various positions in the Public Financial Sector, among which he has been Undersecretary of Finance and Public Credit, representative of Mexico at the International Monetary Fund.
He has been Professor of Economics at the College of Mexico, the Autonomous Technological Institute of Mexico and Stanford.
On December 1, 1998, he was appointed Governor of Banco de México and ratified his position on December 1, 2004 until 2010.
On January 12, 2009, he was appointed president of the Bank for International Settlements (BIS) based in Basel, Switzerland, the highest position that any Latin American has held at said institution.
Trajectory in Grupo Financiero Banorte-Ixe
From March 2011 to December 2014, he was Chairman of the Board of Directors of Grupo Financiero Banorte. During his four years as Executive Chairman, the bank's assets under management nearly tripled, net earnings also multiplied in the same proportion, return on assets increased from 1.2 to 1.5 percent, and earnings per share increased by 65 percent already including a dilution due to a capital increase in 2013.
