History

In the year 111 BC. C., during the reign of Emperor Wu of the Han Dynasty, Shi An County was established. It can be considered that the creation of this county was the origin of the current city. In the year 507 the city received the name Guizhou.
Guilin prospered during the Tang and Song dynasties. The city served as a link between the central government and the southern border areas; For this reason, various military garrisons were installed to serve as border protection. Various canals were built throughout the city that were used as a means of transportation. This is where agricultural products traveled from the fertile Yangtze Plain to the southernmost tip of the empire.
During the Ming Dynasty, Guilin became the capital of Guangxi Province. In 1914 the capital was taken away by the city of Nanning. In 1921, Guilin became one of the headquarters of the army led by Sun Yat-sen
Starting in 1940, the city received its current name. In 1981, the central government decreed that Guilin, along with four other cities (Beijing, Hangzhou and Suzhou), should receive special protection in order to preserve their cultural heritage as well as their landscapes.
