Guayabal is the municipal seat of the municipality of Armero in the department of Tolima in Colombia, located at 352 m s. no. m.. It has an average temperature of 27 degrees Celsius. Distant from the city of Ibagué, capital of the same department, about 95 km. After the eruption of Nevado del Ruíz, which triggered the great tragedy, the headwaters went from the extinct Armero to the new headwaters Guayabal (which at that time had the legal position of police inspection with exceptional functions of municipal seat).

Culture and events

History

The village that would form the municipality (initially district) was founded on December 16, 1539 with the name of Guayabal, by Lieutenant Matilde Bahamón under the order of Sebastian de Belalcázar.

The municipality of Armero was established by the Constituent Assembly of the State of Cundinamarca, originally with the name of district of Guayabal, being the head of the district the 'parish' (population) of the same name, in the same way and time the district of Méndez, with Decree number 321 of April 1, 1886 (given in Neiva) the 'village' (municipality in the Sovereign State of Tolima) of Méndez was eliminated and the territory was divided between the districts of Guayabal and Honda. Being President of the Republic, General Rafael Reyes Prieto, with National Decree number 1049 of September 27, 1908, determined the transfer of the municipal seat from Guayabal to San Lorenzo and changed the name of the municipality of Guayabal to San Lorenzo, and With Decrees number 1181 of October 30, 1908 and number 073 of January 15, 1909, it set the limits of the municipality. By departmental Ordinance number 047 of May 2, 1930, the name of the municipality of San Lorenzo was changed to Armero in memory of José León Armero. As a result of the tragedy of Armero that occurred on November 13, 1985 (where the head of the municipality disappeared), by Ordinance number 15 of November 13, 1986, the population of Guayabal was established as the head of the municipality.
