Shadowgray (Shadowfax in the original English) is a fictional horse from J. R. R. Tolkien's legendarium, appearing in the novel The Lord of the Rings. Shadowfax is one of the mearas, the lords of horses, who were tamed and ridden exclusively by the kings of Rohan. It is worth noting his enormous intelligence, loyalty and, above all, speed and resistance. He is silvery gray in color and can understand the language of men.

Shadowgray was lent to Gandalf by King Théoden, though after the wizard freed the king from Saruman's spell, he offered it as a gift in gratitude and never left his horse. Shadowfax also let Pippin and Gimli the Dwarf ride at some point, although both times Gandalf was also mounted. After the War of the Ring, Shadowfax went with Gandalf to Aman.

In the Lord of the Rings movies

In Peter Jackson's adaptations, Shadowfax is tamed by Gandalf, but at no time is he said to have been lent or given to him by King Théoden. Shadowfax is played by two different horses, both Purebred Spanish, named Blanco and Domero. The first is the one that appears in most of the footage. After the films were finished, Len Baynes, one of the stuntmen who rode him, bought Blanco. Blanco was euthanized on April 6, 2014 to avoid his suffering after spending time with severe intestinal and liver problems.
