In 1998, Moore won again at Rio de Janeiro and the Michigan 500. With a total of six podium finishes, he finished fifth in the championship.
In his fourth year as a CART driver for Forsythe, the Canadian took a victory at Homestead in the 1999 season opener, and scored two more podium finishes. That same year, he contested the four dates of the International Race of Champions.
Death
On October 31, 1999, Moore was racing at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, California. It was the final test of the CART, the Marlboro 500, and on the tenth lap, Moore's car lost control at Turn 2 and went off the track at 354 km/h, lifting into the air after the suspension failed. of his vehicle hit an access road to the runway, and consequently crashed into a wall at more than 260 km/h on the side of the pilot's cabin, causing damage to the anti-roll bar. After the first impact, and with the car completely disintegrated, the cabin with Moore inside and unconscious continued to roll over and hit the ground. Finally, it came to a stop face down and completely mangled, with Moore inside it. Moore received fatal head and internal injuries and was airlifted to Loma Linda University Medical Center. Shortly after the impact, Greg Moore died.
The track was accommodated and the race continued, without announcing Moore's death, as the committee decided it could be detrimental to the drivers, causing distraction and a higher number of accidents. His death occurred a month after the fatal crash of Gonzalo Rodríguez on the Laguna Seca date of the CART.
His remains rest in Robinson Memorial Park Cemetery in Coquitlam.
