Greater Poland Voivodeship
The Greater Poland Voivodeship (Polish: województwo wielkopolskie) is one of the 16 provinces (voivodeships) that make up the Republic of Poland, according to the administrative division of the year 1998. It was created on January 1, 1999, from the former Voivodeships of Posnania, Kalisz, Konin, Leszno, and from a part of the former Piła Voivodeship. It is the second in size and the third in population, with 29,826 km² and 3.4 million inhabitants. It is divided into 35 districts or poviatos, of which 4 cities have the category of poviato, and 226 communes. Its main cities are Posnania, Kalisz, Konin, Leszno, Piła and Gniezno. It comprises most of the historical region (except for some small southwestern communities) of the same name (Polish Wielkopolska).
History
The name Greater Poland (Polish: Wielkopolska, German: Großpolen, Latin: Polonia Maior) has been used only for centuries XIV and XV. It is mentioned for the first time in Latin in 1257, and for the first time in Polish in 1449. The names of Greater or Old Poland usually refer to the fact that it is the cradle of Poland as a state. In the past, this area was inhabited by the Polano tribe and was simply called Poland. The Giecz and Posnania forts were built in the X century. Greater Poland was the central region of the country of Miecislao I and Boleslao I the Brave, Posnania was the capital of Poland. It was not until the 11th century century that the capital was changed to Krakow.
Following the Partitions of Poland in the 18th century, the region came under Prussian rule and suffered a process forced Germanization. During World War II, it was annexed by Nazi Germany under the name of Wartheland or Warthegau, country of Varta. In 1945, he returned to Poland.
Geographic location
The voivodeship is located in west-central Poland. It has two natural parks, several nature reserves and several landscape parks. The two main rivers in the region are the Varta and the Noteć. The north of the voivodeship is a lake region.
