Gran Via station
Gran Vía is a station on lines 1 and 5 of the Madrid Metro located under Gran Vía, in the Centro district, under the San Luis network, a square where Gran Vía and Gran Vía meet. the streets of Fuencarral, Hortaleza and Montera.
History
The platforms of Line 1 were opened to the public in 1919 under the name Red de San Luis when the metro service was inaugurated in the city. The Gran Vía did not yet exist as such, but a year later he adopted that name. During the dictatorship of Francisco Franco, the name of the station was changed to José Antonio, just as the name of the Gran Vía had been changed to Avenida de José Antonio (alluding to José Antonio Primo de Rivera).
On February 26, 1970, the platforms of line 5 were inaugurated directly with the name of José Antonio, being put into service on Monday, March 2 of the same year, and fourteen years later, in 1984, the station resumed the name of Gran Vía.
For many years the image of this station was that of the temple that housed the elevators, the work of the architect Antonio Palacios. It was made of polished granite and had an iron and glass canopy. To use the elevator you had to pay a few cents. The original lobby, also the work of Palacios, was decorated with tiles. When the temple was dismantled in 1972, it was moved to Porriño (Pontevedra), the architect's hometown. Subsequently, with the comprehensive reform of 2018, the project to install a replica of it in its original location was carried out. During the works, the original remains of said temple appeared, specifically the elevator shaft, located at the end of Calle Montera and Gran Vía.
Since July 3, 2016, the platforms of line 1 of the station remained closed due to works to improve the facilities on the line between the stations of Plaza de Castilla and Sierra de Guadalupe. The completion of the The works were scheduled for November 12, 2016, with the station platforms reopening on November 13, when the works were completed and service was restored on the last section of line 1 to open, between the Cuatro Caminos and Atocha stations. Renfe. In this section, the actions carried out were: the waterproofing and consolidation of the tunnel, the oldest in the Madrid underground, which was reinforced by means of cement injections and special concrete projections with metal support meshes, and the installation of the rigid catenary, as well as the assembly of the rest of the facilities and services. Since July 2017, line 5 has been closed and reopened in September.
Between 2018 and 2021, structural works were carried out to connect the station through a long corridor that runs parallel to the section of Calle de la Montera with the Cercanías Madrid de Sol station, thus favoring Metro-Metro intermodality Surroundings.
Reform
From August 20, 2018 until July 2021, the station was closed for works to make it accessible to people with reduced mobility, connect it with the Sol de Cercanías Madrid station, and open a replica of the original elevator, with the Antonio Palacios temple, in addition to other maintenance works. Although the station could not be accessed, trains (both line 1 and line 5) continued to pass through it without stopping.
Originally, the completion date of the works was scheduled for April 2019, but it was later pushed back to mid-October, the first quarter of 2020, March 2020 and "late 2020 or early 2021" ». The COVID-19 crisis postponed the progress of the works and the reopening date. announcement on April 7, 2021, to the month of July. On June 3, the final date for the opening of the station was announced, July 16, 2021.
