Gosu (expression)

The word gosu (from Korean 고수, written in Hangul, or 高手, in Hanja, "champion", literally "high [高, go ] mano [手, su]") in Spanish, is mainly used in computer and gamer circles meaning a top quality player of video games; that is to say, to indicate the fanatic video gamer, who is also considered an expert or professional in video games. The expression is especially used in very popular games such as StarCraft, Halo 3, Diablo 2, League of Legends, Warcraft III World of Warcraft and ^Dota 2. Despite its Korean origin, it has spread enormously due to the extensive South Korean presence in the gamer communities.

Also applied to describe some actions within these fan circles. This is how we speak, for example, of a gosu replay, referring to a repetition of a game of a strategy game that has been spectacular.

Description

Gosu is considered to be a person who has remarkable ability in games. The Gosu will dedicate all his potential to the almost total mastery of the video game, to be a master of the game . Unlike cheaters, the gosu would not use cheats to succeed or stand out in the game, since he would not gain honor and pride by using means beyond his own ability.

In extreme cases, a Gosu can sacrifice his personal relationships and his physical and mental health to dedicate himself exclusively to playing a particular video game, with the sole purpose of becoming a master of the game; and in this way to be recognized by other Gosu.

Origins

In the Korean language, the word gosu was originally used to refer to a person with great skill, usually in martial arts or baduk; and later also applied to video games.

In Korea, in addition to gosu, the Korean words joongsu are also commonly used to refer to a slightly good player, hasu to indicate a beginner player, and chobo to denote a mediocre player. The words "chobo" and "hasu" indicate the same skill level, but "hasu" is a more political/technical word to describe the non-expert beginning player (an equivalent to newbie), and implies a desire for general respect in front of that person regardless of their abilities. Instead "chobo" It is a more derogatory and insulting way of describing the player (an equivalent to licking), which is intended to indicate the inferiority of the person being described.

In English there are also various back-acronyms from the Korean term. Most originated from the StarCraft community. They are "Graduate of StarCraft University", "God Of StarCraft Universe" or "Guardian of StarCraft Universe". There are also other words like "Manseh" which is like Viva or Urra, also "jinjja and jongmal" which really or truly mean.^{[citation needed]}
