Gorj District
Gorj is a district of Romania (Județ) in the Wallachian region, whose capital is Târgu Jiu ( 98,897 inhabitants).

- Go east.
- Mehedinţi and Caraş-Severin west.
- Hunedoara north.
- Dolj south.
Demographics
In 2000, it had a population of 387,308, with a population density of 69 /km².
- 98% Romanians.
- The rest are gypsies and other minorities.
Geography
The district has a total area of 5602 km².
The northern part of the district consists of several mountains of the southern group of the Carpathians.
In the west are the Vulcanului Mountains and in the east are the Negoveanu Mountains. Both groups are separated by the Jiu River, which is the main river in the district.
Economy
The main industries of the district are:

- Wood industry.
Coal is mined in the north of the district, near Motru and Rovinari. There are two thermoelectric power plants in Rovinari and Turceni, and some hydroelectric power plants. It is the district in Romania that produces the most energy, generating 36% of the country's electricity.
Due to the decline in mining activity, this district has one of the highest unemployment rates in the country.
