Gómez is a very common Spanish patronymic surname in Spain and Latin America. Derived from the name of Gome plus -ez patronymic form of surnames ending in -ez.

Etymology

The etymon is of Gothic origin, short for Gomesco, which means son of Gome (or Gomo), in turn related to the words in Proto-Germanic gumaz (in Gothic guma, Old English guma, Middle English gome) and Latin homo, all meaning 'man'. The patronymic ending -ez would also go back to Gothic -iks.

Distribution

In Spain it is the ninth most common surname, it is widely distributed, more frequent in the provinces of Segovia (2,399%), Cantabria (2,226%) and Huelva (2,067%); According to the INE, as of 01/01/2021 in Spain they carry the surname of Gómez: 491,345 as the first surname, 495,202 as the second surname and 13,399 as both surnames.
