The Golden Raspberry Awards, popularly known as Razzies or anti-Oscars (in Spanish: "Premios de la Raspberry de Oro"), were created by film critic and writer John J. B. Wilson in 1980, trying to complement and criticize the Academy Awards with a comic approach, rewarding the worst actors, screenwriters, directors and films in the film industry American.

The awards are annual and voted for by members of the Golden Raspberry Award Foundation, which is an open association that grants voting rights to anyone who pays to register. The name of the award comes from the English phrase "blowing a raspberry", which refers to the sound made by blowing with the tongue between the lips (imitating flatulence) to denote a particularly ridiculous or shoddy artistic act.

The awards are given only to films of the voting year and are presented at a ceremony held on the eve of the Oscars, in an informal event that since its founding has attracted, year after year, increasing attention from the media and the entertainment press. Those selected as finalists rarely personally collect their statuette.

The trophy consists of a golf ball-sized plastic raspberry glued on top of a celluloid reel, sprayed with gold spray paint, and has a face value of $4.89.

Criticism

The Razzies have received much criticism for various situations, including from news sources such as Indiewire and The Daily Telegraph, for example, that members of the Golden Raspberry Foundation are not being asked to view the nominated films, and that apparently anyone can join the Golden Raspberry Foundation, as long as they pay at least $40, much different than the invitation-only form of admission to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Critics see it as a problem that the Razzies only pick "easy targets" and popular films over those perceived as lesser known, despite being more deserving of a nomination for their poor production quality, continually preferring celebrities over less popular actors, ostensibly for publicity and attention.

Indiewire's Sam Adams said the Razzies are "like those annoying people who hurl insults at comedians, or a person who yells at a concert during a quiet song, they do whatever they do to get attention. Razzies appropriately avoid pouncing on the little ones; they don't attack indie productions with no budget that no one has seen for bad lighting or terrible sound." Robbie Collin of The Daily Telegraph said that "the Razzies' most recurring flaw is in picking the most obvious targets.", which becomes more redundant and worn out every year". William Bibbiani of CraveOnline stated that the Razzies follow "a cheap form of jokes", and "with a handful of exceptions, they only see fit to nominate the most infamous films of the year, and not necessarily the worst'. Cracked.com's Carolyn Burke describes the awards as "a rickety operation run by a bunch of lazy trolls who are guilty of the same arrogance they claim to satirically attack" and further stated that "the Razzies are an outdated 'joke' that has outlived any good intentions or relevance they ever had, and have become nothing more than a mean-spirited pit of sad criticism worse than any of the movies that aim to destroy with simple comedy and without intelligence".
